Look what just got leaked. No matrix this time, every knob
accessible. The keyboard version of the mono desktop.
Aparently bugfixes for the desktop might be in the works so
that they can be daisychained for better functionality.

Hopefully they get the evolver out of their system, and have
decided to work on something new and exciting next, like all
VCO synthesizer instead of a hybrid analogue. ;)

Where do I download it, SLSK isn't giving any hits? ;)

Um... can you download a keyboard? ;P

Although I do hope they eventually do make an all software
version... with fm technology you can make a nearly perfect
analogue sound, and I would love for everybody to be able to
try out the evolver, they are great synthesizers.

I've got the desktop evolver and it is definately exciting.
I can do conventional subtractive synthesis, FM, hard sync,
PWM, 2pole and 4 pole lowpass filter and seperate highpass
filter, inbuilt arpegio style step sequencer, inbuilt delay
lines and feedback structure to do things like karplus
strong synthesis, I can feed in an external stereo signal
and use it as an fx unit. I can hook it up to midi and even
use play the thing as a resonator over my incoming vocals.
It has all the waveshapes from the prophet VS and space for
some user ones too on the digital oscs. I can FM modulate
and ringmod both digital oscs at the same time! I.e osc4 FM
-> osc3 -> FM -> osc 4, also with both ringmoding each other
and then there's the two analogue oscs to play with!
modulation matrix is extensive (read fabulous)....
now if they can make that into a small keyboard version and
still keep it cheap then they will have a winner :)

I was planning to buy the Evolver all because of this thread
! I've checked out the instruction movies to see what is
capable of, listened to some demo samples on the site, and
checked out the dealers around here... and there's one!

I think Fah is a new toy richer by next friday

Though: worth the money?

I think so. Its fun to work with, and it sounds great. You
can do some stuff with it that I thought was only possible
with programs like absynth and reaktor. There are a couple
issues that I have with it. One, the matrix, although one of
the best matrixes that I have worked with, still makes
things kind of guessy when you are right in the moment.
Another is the fact that while it is being played through an
external midi device, you have to leave a half second
between the last note played before pressing the next note
(depending on how high the decay of the patch is set to)
because it won't recognize a second note that is being
played at the same time.

As well, its a secure investment, because the resale value
pretty much sticks to what you bought it as. They are so
sturdy, you could fight off a band of roving murauders with
one, and then plug it in for a jam.

I have the desktop one, and its one of those pieces of gear
I would buy again if it were stolen or lost.

so, if i understand it right...
when they say mono-synth, they REALLY mean... mono... Kinda
weird that it chokes the second note played, mostly it just
chokes the one you played before the current one.

With desktop one, you mean this one right?

Yes.

It depends on the patch tho, just don't be supprised if it
happens. Belief me, for all the good that those things have,
having only a couple bads like that is practically nothing!

One of the best money for value items that I own.

You can see the mono evolver keyboard in action here

Those patches sound fantastic.

you can get it to stop doing that so you can press another
note and it will change, just set the oscillators to have
some legato and that should fix it. there may be a midi
setting you have to do too, I will post up my notes I've
made if I can find them

I was playing with the evolver yesterday and got it to
sound like my Amstrad CPC and then....a SID! huzzah!

hint: LFO to modulate osc 3 freq. set osc 3 to shape 1. lfo
shape pulse, frequency st4 is a good place to start. use seq
1 to play tune on osc, and seq2 to set the LFO amount (about
20 at most sounds good)

evolver is an excellent investment. although it has
limitations, it can make such a huge range of sounds...I
have made it sound like: SID, 8bit computer, fat analogue
monosynth, FM-ish synth, resonator, plucked string synth,
classic (divide down) string sound, ppg-ish, and its done
pretty good impressions of a kawai K5000 and wavestation!
plus it has done some nasty horrible speaker/ear breaking
sounds and even a decent sh101 style drum n bass synth....
and im crap at synth programming, a pro could make this box
sound like almost anything.

dave_g
i've never bought any hardware synth, are they easy to
connect up?.. i've not really bothered about buying any
hardware effects/synths etc.

I would on the other hand love to buy a drum machine to duck
about with and master it properly.

But a synth doesn't interest me that much, since i have so
many programs to learn already on my computer.

Anyone want to sell a drum machine ? :D

They are about as easy as a 1/8" cable and a midi cable.
