Got one for christmass- is 7.2 MP and exageration in terms
of usefullness?

I'm not a professional photographer but I like having
detailed pics- but is 7.2 going to far?

certainly not if you want big reproduction (prints), my
girlfriends work uses a kodak pro slr which is 13.5 MP!
