I really have to take some time to put all my records in a
certain order. Just to avoid spending half an hour trying to
find what suddenly comes to my mind...

So what do you ppl do?
Alphabetical?
Stylistical?
Chronological?
Astrological?

1- kind of music
2 - artist name

with that is pretty easy to find anything, but my collection
is small, so that is why maybe

by artist and/or genre.

Yeah, but that takes me to the point of:

How many kinds of music are there?

genres and artist names, but don't count sub-sub-genre's and
meaningless names like Braindance

...I never know when to stop sub-genrizing!

you have to think about where the genre borders lie for you,
but I think by genre.

these are the genres I use:

rock
pop
hip hop
trip hop
techno

(and in techno I throw all the idm shit, drum n bass, real
techno, ambient...)

I have to admit I'm having problems on my new 20GB (that's
10,000 songs) mp3 player because I think categorising too
deeply.

Instead of Rock as a broad genre with many songs I a few
songs in several sub-genres such as Acoustic,
Alternative Rock, Soft Rock, Indie
Rock
, Hard Rock. Brit Rock.. ahem, you get
the picture.

it's tough to draw a line

if you are mixing, organising by BPM might be good

Hip Hop and Trip Hop are two I used to use, but rock?

Nailbomb side by side with The Rolling Stones?
Maybe I cut that a bit deeper...

on second thought I use only the "artist" criteria, but my
room is quite small, so it's not a problem for me to find
anything, even if my CD's are sometimes scattered around the
place

clever idea.

out of interest does anybody know of a website which
explains genres and their sub-genres, possibly giving an
example of each? Where does Ambient become
Meditative and what's the difference between
Electronic and Electronica? What is
Braindance?

I don't know any website, but there's a book called LOOPS
that's exactly that.

I knew of a site once that was incredibly good but when I
formatted my PC I forgot to write it down and I lost it from
my favorites. Very Annoying.
