The Parable of You and Me

I'm really fucking proud of this one. I thought I might
share it with you.

Thanks for listening in advance.

Is this your best one? Or is it a RUSE. I'm going to
download this and test your luck! (roll the dice)

well, it took an age for it to start to download which i
assume to be because myspace is arse, but i have now
listened to it.
it's pretty good. nice and interesting, though i'm not sure
i'm partial to the melody structure, but that's just me. i
did like your game music vibes track an awful lot though and
would rate it higher than this fella.
still nice work. most enjoyable.

this song is like some tacky little pamphlet in yo' daddy's
bottom drawer.

Well I listened. You are getting too desperate and it is
showing in everything. This track is a below average effort
in every sense of the word. The tune is instantly
forgetable, it just sounds like it comes from a sub standard
Sega game of the early 90's...it also lacks any individual
identity as most of your music seems to. You seem to make
what you think music should sound like instead of
what you feel music should sound like.

It wasn't that bad.

The problem with music posted here, or in the public domain
in general, is that people judge it against what they
imagine is the intended end result - what the author might
be trying to do - rather than take a track on it's
own merits. It has the effect of making the track appear
unfinished to the listener and maybe your perception (that's
one's perception, not lee's :) would be different if
presented with the track on a released medium through a
proper label.

That said, I agree with what you (now I do mean mr nadniarb
:) said, just not in quite so damning a way.

Because I resect you so much I will explain the background
to my post.

Since joining xltronic there aren't many people who have
made anything I have been impressed with. Oddioblender is
included as one of the few people who has impressed me. He
is capable of producing some excellent stuff. This track,
as Gus well knows, is something he could produce 10 of in
one day but he is that keen to get listened to and
appreciated that he will label it his best ever track
(something he has done before) and it lessens peoples desire
to listen in future.

The comments I make about Oddio's music is done as if this
was a 'real world release' for want of a better term because
that is clearly what he strives to be and how he wants to be
judged. There is a frustration in what I wrote which has
came across more negatively than intended.

I agree about listening to music posted on messageboards
being judged differently. The whole listening experience is
different, for starters you haven't actively sort out the
music to listen to and then there is a tendancy to listen
out only for stuff that interests you in the track which
leads to people not appreciating the track as a whole but
rather in 5 second snippets. I try to keep that in mind
when I listen but I'm obviously not always successful.

well, i appreciate your criticism, lee. honesty may not
always be kind, but that's honesty.

what in particular threw you off the track, if i might ask
for future improvement?

You seem to make
what you think music should sound like instead of
what you feel music should sound like.

yes, i do that. i may not be able to change music, but
what's the point if you don't try?

or perhaps you suggest my music lacks emotion, and i get
that a lot. :)

for me its an ok track, no where near as good as classics
like 'helicopter' though, maybe with some voice on it and
further development i would like it more

I think whatever merits the track may have are invalidated
by the very tired sounding breaks/drum'n'bass lite, oooh
sped up now... ohh, more evenly paced. Some musical formulas
you can play with in all manner of combinations, others have
a timeless appeal. Intelligent d'n'b is a fad long, long
past its sell by date.

i liked it okay... generally found the drum programming a
little bland, wasnt really feeling the drums sounds, made
the whole thing a bit more amateur sounding than it had to
be

i wanted to not use my usual drill and breakcore beats. i'm
going to try more downtempo stuff soon.

you know, like pen and paper and when you color letters on
it it's called writing.

or the term writing music. i.e. making music

but I think he meant actual writing

...
...
...

writing music is different from making music. i doubt many
electronic musicians actually 'write' their random cut &
paste sounds and samples. the simplistic 'melodies' are
usually hammered out as an afterthought.

well, yes i wrote almost all of it except for two or three
loops as texture for the drums, and they're not used often
in the song.

i'm sorry to report that i didn't like it at all. it's
time to expand on the things in your music that are unique
and memorable, and this track is just too generic. there's
no question that you've done better work.

i agree with belch ... if you are going to attempt drill
than it has to be something new and considering so many
people have done it to death , .. well i think its a bit of
a waste of time i guess. thing is it is very fun
programming drums in 32/64steps a and doing that but... eh.
and if you are using videogame esque synths more bleeps and
sid-y noises are needed.
