Yamaha "toy" keyboards.

Did you ever have one as a kid? You know with about 100
really fake sounding presets and cheesy beats like "Waltz"
or "16 beat".

This is probably how I got into electronic music. Those
preset backing tracks were great fun to play whilst fucking
with the tempo/backing tracks. They were sort of like the
retarded little brothers of the DX-7 or DX-100 programmable
synths. I'm gonna get me one of those, or maybe a keytar.
Fuck 303's! It's all about the keyTARR!

yeah i had one, then i sold it to lfo in 1989 so they could
make 'frequencies'.

i found one under a couch in my dad's old house and made a
track out of it - the best shit on there is the drum
sounds...they sound so hollow and fake

would be fun to hook one up to my current setup and toy
around though

SH101 = Keytar (this one aint no toy)

I want one of those yamaha keytars... some of them actually
have programability, and not just AWM sounds.

Altho, I would rather start a conversation about the casio
cheap keyboards. Yamaha and casio are about the same for the
most part, at least up until the 90's. In the eighties they
both had synthesizers with professional features. But the DX
series took off and became famous, and the CZ series by
casio didn't.

Yes, the CZ series was awesome. I remember trying to program
the riff from "Da Funk" into my mate's mum's CZ when I was
14. All I got was a load of screechy noises though!

LOL @ "16 beat"

I had one of those. I enjoyed playing with the tempo when i
was young

I used to hold down one key and change the preset, too. That
was fun.

drooled.

Say what?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

BAM!!!!!

Yamaha DX7. Arguably one of the most famous synthesizers of
all time.

Yamaha has a couple of different markets that they cater
towards. The home market, the educational market and the
professional market. They are also extremely well known for
their pianos.

I got an (almost) fully functional DX11 free from my school.
A couple of the very low + high keys don't work properly and
some of the buttons need a huge push to make them work but
it makes great pads fine.
BTW if you've still got one of these toy/crap/shit
keyboards, open it up and start circuit bending it

I own a fully functional Casio VL-Tone. It looks in great
condition, no scratches or anything, with the manual and
original bag. It is a calculator and keyboard with about a
dozen rhythms and a few sounds. If you're smart, you can
enter certain numbers for different ADSR and Filter
parameters in the calculator function and it will create
chip/8bit sounds from the numbers you entered for each item.
It's the hip-hop. :D

that particular one has been heavily circuit bent... hence
the "metal things" :)

Casio VL-Tone! I bought one at a jumble sale a few years
back. I loved fucking around with it. It's got to be the
ultimate toy synth.

I think we should all name some presets. I liked the
ultra-fake electric guitar sounds as used on "Connection" by
Elastica.

i haven't had a yamaha.
once I borrowed a casio with 20 or less keys from a friend
and tried to record music with it, plugged through an old
soviet tape recorder which had a 'levels' button which, if
unpressed, put some distortion on the sound.
favourite sound from it - voice ah (or choir ah) and elec
piano (nice sustain)
favourite rhythm - bossanova and either 8 beat or 16 beat,
can't remember. If the tempo was close to maximum, these
rhythms sounded like a good bigbeat and punk correspondingly
(both through that distortion, of course)
