oh, i disagree with a lot of these.

it's often hard to pin down "originators" because musical
genres tend to take small steps in any given direction.
it's not very often you could honestly say a band or artist
was really, really original. and certainly most of this
thread is just a list of "favorites" or "most popular"
rather than the "originators".

how's about you point out bands who've pioneered the sounds
that other people in this thread think their named-bands
pioneered?

my point is that it's all relative - how carefully you want
to look. if you took elvis presley, he did not invent rock
n roll. the music came from a commercial hit factory of
songwriters, who were ripping off hank williams and that
other crossover guy, who were just fusing together honky
tonk and country, which stems from the blues. and so on.
it's not like these things just miraculously appeared out of
thin air one day. there was a lot of intermingling of
subgenres and influences.

I think what most people mean with "originator" is the first
person or band to bring a certain sound or genre to the
surface, in other words, making it available to the "mass
audience".

if looked at it like that, a lot of the names mentioned do
make sense. kind of. my pretty.

even so, there are a lot here that could be quite
debateable. and really, who cares to do that? not me.

I agree with your point, btw, which makes the whole
discussion senseless, hence the other definition.

come to think of it, it's ofcourse still a senseless
discussion..

ok, for instance...

you say Elvis presley and i'll say Bill Haley & His Comets,
who recorded the most popular version of rock around the
clock, which is largely regarded as the first rock and roll
song (even though it is straight-up stolen from a hank
williams song).

Bjork and Aphex Twin and Elvis are all people who took ideas
from originals and did it so well, that they got known for
it.

I wouldn't say Boards of Canada started a new genre / sound,
they just make very good and soulful music.

My picks:
Kraftwerk
The techno fathers: Derrick May, Juan Atkins etc.
Brian Eno
The Black Dog
Aphex Twin (Hangable Auto Bulb)

Kraftwerk! of course! in that case, also Jean Michel Jarre.
they do it for me - the two first electronic pioneers.
