what's a battles?

btw, they should sign abba and make them release new album
and then start signing quality electronica artists like they
used to.

I thought Battles would be a great band since Ian Williams &
Ty Braxton are involved but the EPs were disappointing,
they're good at what they do but it's pretty boring.

The sample on the site is better than expected but still bad

...what? Warp... sign... battles...?

I had this mental image of Sean Booth holding up a big BITE
ME sign in the general direction of, oh, let's say Tom
Jenkinson.

wtf is with sign battles?!!?! a load of authors of poor
quality IDM (like me) fighting over who gets signed.

IDM WWF wrestling - just as uncontrolled and random, but
instead of smacking eachother over the head with chairs, you
throw Rolands around at each other,

offline staz on 2005-12-09 05:26 [#01796749]

also, there are so many idm grannies that can't stand having
a label develop in more than one direction. this thread is
bound to be filled up with complete horseshit.

warp signing music with guitars ≠ selling out.

If they were innovative guitar acts I wouldn't mind, but
they're just cash-cow indie bands.

Breaking news: Warp sign Menswe@r!

Maximo Park. They sound like Shed Seven.

how are they cash-cows? you think they make warp tons of
cash?

Probably more than Jimmy Edgar or something. It's pretty
safe to say.
I think they should concentrate on dancefloor bombs, that
are super-fresh production-wise but also awesome fun to
dance to.

offline staz on 2005-12-09 06:13 [#01796778]

well, it's their label. i don't think i've ever seen warp
made a "cash over quality" decision yet, although a lot of
people are whining like babies over it. i think they still
have some great electronic releases as well, "bounce, make,
model" is awesome.

offline swears from junk sleep on 2005-12-09 06:18 [#01796780]

Well, there are other labels of course. They can do what
they like, obviously. I think the last Jamie Lidell album
was class.

artists up their fucking arses, the cunts.

u could say that about all the artists they sign though; how
do u know a cash cow?

'Cause an indie band with big-arse pop hooks and trendy
haircuts is gonna sell purely lodsa more rekkids than some
obscure electronica guy.
But, it's one of the greatest ever British record labels, so
who am I to judge?

Are Battles another "Indie" band though? They don't have
big arse pop hooks either. I can't see Warp getting any
return on Battles, but I think they are an interesting group
to sign.

i listened to the sample and it seemed very unexciting , not
very thoughtful original or good . so this probably means i
should start sending demo's to warp records!

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-12-09 14:04 [#01797117]

Hmmm. Perhaps you guys didn't notice the IDM elements, or
the way the tone developed through the sample. I thought it
sounded neat. I don't like indie rock, but occasionally
there is some rock music that catches my attention.

offline Vin3islih from United Kingdom on 2005-12-09 15:08 [#01797142]

This isn't what I'd call Indie perse, it's something more
like post rock.

yeah, i read an interview by maximo park (for some reason)
and the general gist was that they sent a demo to Warp
without really expecting to be signed.

they sent a demo to warp? the warp site always says that
theyre not accepting demos?!?!

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-12-10 02:18 [#01797344]

Thats the best way to tell people no when they get a demo
they don't want.

i suppose - probably just to discourage all the shit artists
(like me) from bothering to send demos, lol

I'm also tired of all the message board whining every time
Warp signs a new non-IDM artist. They have never been a pure
electronic label, in fact they have been releasing crossover
music such as Seefeel, Jimi Tenor and Broadcast since the
middle 90s.

Battles sounds very promising to my ears

If they like an album, they will release it. There not
really the kind of label that needs to recruit.

i cannae wait for the debut album in september. b ep/ep c is
monstrous beast of a compilation. listen to hi-lo and then
try and tell me that this band don't belong on warp.

and they're something else live, john stanier pounding away
on his tubs of steel with electronic blip blooping and
backwards sounds, you can definitely boogie to this.

they definitely deserve more credit on here in my opinion..
hope they can develop their sound further for a full length.
