I just watched the whole thing. Fucking incredible.
When I first read this thread I was bewildered, I hadn't heard any news of the speech. Found out about it on a kuro5hin article.
But dear god, what an impressive piece. Resembled the structure of a Chomsky lecture, but it was so refreshing and stunning to hear it through another's voice, especially that of a writer.
Stunning use of language. I'm still reeling from it and am still choked up by it. Incredible.

the bit where he talks about how he could be a speechwriter for Bush and would have him say:
"God is good. God is great. God is good. My God is good. Bin Laden's God is bad. His is a bad God. Saddam's God was bad, except he didn't have one. He was a barbarian. We are not barbarians. We don't chop people's heads off. We believe in freedom. So does God. I am not a barbarian. I am the democratically elected leader of a freedom-loving democracy. We are a compassionate society. We give compassionate electrocution and compassionate lethal injection. We are a great nation. I am not a dictator. He is. I am not a barbarian. He is. And he is. They all are. I possess moral authority. You see this fist? This is my moral authority. And don't you forget it."
.. brilliant. especially if you see/hear him delivering the lines himself.

yes!
I had a lump in my throat when he delivered the "I possess moral authority. You see this fist? This is my moral authority. And don't you forget it." bit. It's really powerful stuff; his eyes staring through the camera, godd..

Don't know what you guys make of his books, but check out The Birthday Party for a more (shall we say) nuanced portait of power and powerlessness. Whilst I am pleased that he takes such stances on global politics, I think they have tended to make people forget what a great writer he was. Also, the terrible poetry he writes now doesn't do him any favours. But his plays from the 60s are brilliant, and say things in a way which is far more skilfully suggestive. Or, to use an example: with a silencer, rather than a sub-machine gun

I watched it last night. Very, very good, very intense, very compassionate, very angry and highly articulate. Powerful and compelling. An example of the medium of television being used to great effect rather than just the ususal bollocks.

As the others said, no.
However, he did retire from his literary career in 2002, I believe, to focus on political campaigning.

It was really fucking great. The staging of the thing was excellent, with the picture of him when he was younger and the way he stares into the camera. I am however wondering why I have read so little about the speech in the media. Especially since I live in Sweden, where the papers usually write a shitload about all things Nobel Prize related.
