what is christmas related where you live?

we have these cookiecakes shaped like people, some
raspberry-ish soda, some brown-ish cookies called
"pepperkake" and some more that I can't really remember in
the cake departement.

the dinner-ish stuff.. we have sheep-ribs that are first
stored in something very salty, then it soaks in water to
take away some of the salt, then it's steam-boiled on sticks
of birchwood (pinekjøtt). we also have pork ribs that are
made in the oven and some weird fish stuff that's soaked in
lye or something until it becomes all wobbly (lutefisk)..
it's not very good imo, but still... then there are some
slightly spicy dinner-sausages... there's more, but I can't
be bothered writing it all.. I also don't know it all, as it
varies from region to region.

people around here are all crazy for ptarmigans, for some
strange reason. not that it is the normal christmas
tradition to eat them here, i think that custom is only 30
years old or something. they don´t taste that good really.
last christmas it was forbidden to shoot them so half the
nation went crazy. i hope they ate something decent
instead.

i think that norway and iceland must have rather similar
christmas customs, from what i can read from your
description.

do you really like it? I think it tastes like a less salty
pinnekjøtt, and less salty = bad.

but no pinnakjød...

"berawecka" - it's some kind of fruit cake too i'm afraid.
with dried fruits. it has an interesting taste but i'm not
that fond of it... (just for the record, i tried a
jujuba juice once in a korean restaurant, and it tasted very
much like berawecka.)

"bradala" - christmas biscuits. they come in many varieties
and many shapes... you can have chocolate flavoured ones,
cinnamon flavoured ones (usually those are star-shaped),
with jam, plain ones, two-colored ones (plain/chocolate),
almond, chocolate & ginger, etc... they're good! : )

"glühwein" or "vin chaud" (lit. "hot wine") - a hot and
sweet drink, with wine and spices. it's basically the same
thing as the swedish glögg. for children there is also hot
orange juice which is kind of the same with orange juice
instead of wine.

hot chestnuts ("marrons chauds"). you can buy them at
locomotive-shaped brown little mobile stands who are only
here in autumn and winter.

that the traditional christmas dessert is usually
log-shaped, called a "bûche de noël" (christmas log) and
swiss roll-like (my mother and grandmother make it filled
with chestnut puree and covered with chocolate). maybe it's
like that everywhere but since i'm not sure... here you go.

in southern france (province), there are thirteen
typical christmas desserts, served at the same time ( ! ). i
don't know what they all are but you can find the
information on the internet, i'm sure.

generally, over the course of the holidays, my mom makes:
turkey, ham, stew, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole,
croissants, stuffing w/ chestnuts, cornbread occaisionally,
corn on the cob, and sweet potatoes with marshmallows as
well as various cookies for dessert.

my mama is danish and so we have this special holiday on
dec. 23rd called little christmas eve...she makes these
yummy fluffy pancake balls called abel skeever or something.
we put powdered sugar on them and eat apple sauce on the
side.

at work, during the holidays we have 4 new milkshake
specials! they are all muy delicioso: peppermint,
cranberry, pumpkin, and egg nog.

i like christmas sugar cookies, so long as they have tons of
frosting.
