I have a lot of this guys later stuff, like Tehillim,
Desert Music, Drumming and City Life, but I have never heard
his early tape-loop stuff. Is 'It's Gonna Rain' worth
getting hold of? From what I have read, it sounds like it's
just two recorded voices which are played over one another,
osciallting back and forth - like the first and last tracks
on Orbital's Brown album.

Have you got Music for 18 Musicians?

No. Is that good? I have a track he did called 'Eight
Lines', where a refrain is repeated over and over, and
changes slightly in phases. Is '18 musicians' similar, as I
heard it was? (btw, I like eight lines, so that wd be a gd
thing). Also, do you know anything about Terry Riley? Is
there anything to his music, or is just modernist gimmickry?

you might want to get violin and piano phase imo

i would say that reich is modernist gimmickry and terry
riley is more ehm... original. although i must add that that
doesn't mean i don't like reichs music, in fact, i like it a
lot.
music for 18 musicians is definitely worth checking out, as
is his early electronic work. i really like violin phase for
instance (much better than his other 'phases')

I'm sorry, I'm not a Reich expert by any means, I only have
18 Musicians, Telahim, and Desert Music. But I have to say
if you have not heard 18 Musicians you really really really
really must, its one of my favourite pieecs of music ever.
Its about an hour long. Its clearly very influencial because
its slightly ruined a lot of music I like before that I
thought was totally original. I'm familiar with some of his
'phase' stuff, its really not like that, its more like the
Desert music but more ...'ambient', I guess. Its got that
pulse thing going throught the whole thing. Very very
beautiful.

(So yeah, please please get hold of it because it will blow
you away)

Tehillim* ...clearly not an expert...

You have to get 'Music For Mallet Instruments, Voices And
Organ' if you haven't already.
And 'Electric Counterpoint' with Pat Metheny

also get glass' two pages
i dont like music for 18 musicians and like desert music
better, though i just heard both just once
the best thing reich did imo is the video opera 'three
tales'

Looks like this is going to be an expensive Christmas. What
about Different Trains? And how do you think stuff like
Reich, Glass, Cage etc compares with Aphex Twin and the sort
of music that this website focuses on? I started out
listening to a lot of Warp Records stuff, but in the last
year or two I have heard quite a lot of modern classical
music, as well as jazz music. I still like the electronic
stuff, though, but when I look at my CD collection now, it
seems a bit weird: Bach, Chris Clark, Autechre, Reich,
Ligeti, Bill Evans, Coltrane etc

I would have called myself a near-expert until all AFX's
Analord stuff came out. I haven't heard any of it, although
I've just got hold of the CD for Hangable Auto Bulb. Brings
bakc the memories...

My favorites are Different Trains and Music For 18
Musicians. Musc for 18 Musicians is just hyponotic, sublime
stuff, while Different Trains is pretty harrowing and
hard-hitting, using minimalistic techniques and voice
snippts to tell the story of the transportation of Jews on
various trains during the WWII period.

I think Reich is one of the main imfluences in electronic
music... melodically and structurally, especially more
ambient stuff. I mean the Orb stole a huge sample of Reich
for 'Little Fluffy Clouds'. And the Warp/Sinfonietta gigs -
Aphex Twin, Reich and Cage in the same performance. I'm sure
most electronic artists are fans.

music on first

even reich doesnt know about all the remixes made from his
music anymore, as he states in the here google advertised
wire interview

Ah good, big, you've made me feel better. So is the main
melody from Little Fluffy Clouds - it sounds like it's a
guitar refrain - is that just stolen from Reich?! Well, The
Orb always have been a bunch of slackers.

he, reich likes it though cause it has a different aproach
than the original track

and he didnt get payed for it, but then he got the credits
for the album 'reich remixed' and all worked out in his
opinion, reich's an aimable guy

'music for 18 musicians' is a bit too.. clean for me.

I'd agree with big on 'three tales' - it's excellent.

I would get the tape works, they're incredible (especially
if seen in the context of their time).

I have the new record 'you are', but haven't really listened
yet to say if it's any good.

that "reich remixed" album is terrible, though. I wouldn't
want my name attached to that turd.

qrter likes his Reich dirty.

I don't know how anyone can dislike 18 musicians... the
'pulse' staccato thing is go great. I keep ripping it off
subconsciously in my tracks.

love Reich

love Music For 18 Musicians

if you get a chance to hear any Reich played live, I highly
reccomend it. I saw drumming, music for 3 wood blocks, music
for 2 marimbas (i think thats what it was called), and one
other, which I forget the name (it was a minimalism concert,
with a piece by glass, adams, and reich)

amazing to hear his music live. hyponotic...

Music for Six Marimbas was played at the Sinfonietta gig I
saw... very very good indeed. Is that the one you mention?

no, it was only 2 marimbas...

I didn't say I dislike it, I simply like a lot of other
pieces much more.

he uses that 'pulse' staccato thing in about half the pieces
he has made.

Yeah, I noticed it in Desert Music, one of the few other
works I have. I think its a great technique. So simple but
amazing.

let me give a shout out for "music for large ensemble."
hardly anyone ever mentions it, it's probably my favorite
piece.

i think the early tape phase recordings are more interesting
as historical documents than as recordings. they sound
pretty much as krendo described them, never having heard
them. it is, however, gonna rain.
