I'm sure like most of you guys and girls here have or are
gaining a huge collection of music files...be it mp3, ogg,
etc. I spent the majority of my thanksgiving weekend
tagging and organizing files on the 120 gig hard drive i
bought. currently i have at least 100 gigs filled. and i
need some software that will help me tag these files (the
ones that need it) quicker. also organize folders &
information.

i have a minidisc player too, but instead of carrying around
10 minidiscs i'd rather carry around one unit...which leads
me to my ipod questions. are they really worth it? if i
load a 60 gig up to full capacity will it shit the bed, be
slow etc? is itunes a pain in the ass? does it reformat all
of your files? does it allow you to only transfer certain
files to the ipod? i'm bassically looking for people that
have or use this program to explain the pros & cons. i'm
just considering the possiblities...if you hate apple and
know of good alternatives please feel free to post the
alternatives...and not your hate for apple ;)

I don't think there is any problem with filling up the HD. I
like iTunes, I use it anyway. It doesn't have to reformat
all your files. Yes you can transfer only certain files.

this thing works FUCKING wonders

takes a while to load, and takes up a lot of memory.. but
does the job very, very well.

i have an ipod

just got it back from being repaired

they're built like mobile phones - built as part of the
throw-away culture. they inevitably break after a certain
amount of time.

I'd get something else. apparently the new creative zens
don't have that old GAY headphone socket problem, so
investigate one of them. they're cheaper too.

oh yeah and ipods don't do ogg.

neither does itunes.

gay.

i think they do the rest though. certainly mp3/wma.

has anyone figured out how to just drag and drop files into
a usb connected minidisc? i hate the sony software...if i
could just do that i'd forget about getting another mp3
player and continue using my minidisc

I don't think iPods are drag-and-drop, you have to import
through iTunes I think, is that right?

yes

hence, if you're considering buying one, id3-tagit is the
only way to go

i just bought the 30gn ipod and use itunes, and i have no
probs. itunes gives you the option whether you want it to
automatically re-organise your songs or not (which i let it
do) and have been manually sorting the rest out.

it organises it like so: artist (folder) -> albums (folders)
- > songs (files)

songs are formatted like so;

01 Trackname
02 Track name

and if its a double cd then;

1-01 Trackname
2-01 Trackname
etc.

This actually works nicely in that you can listen to an
album in its proper order (not in alphabetical order) but
meta data is important to apple i think and makes itunes
really flexible. so you can sort by genre, grouping, year,
composer etc.

this also means you can select all songs by composer (if u
have filled in that field) which is useful if you want to
add all richard d james tunes to a 'smart playlist' without
worrying about all his aliases.

smart playlists are pretty cool too; you can, for example,
add all the songs in your hip-hop and rap genres, exclude
the year 1995, include only the songs you have recently
added or whatever.. and you can set it to shuffle in a
playlist too - useful at mates houses or parties where you
have quickly setup an appropriate playlist to play through
randomly.

it also tells you how many tunes you have, how much that is
in gbs and how long it would take you to listen to them. you
can also synch it with your ipod so that it automaticlly
updates. if u have usb 2.0 the time it takes isnt actually
that bad (i do it incremently though)...

hope this helps, any more questions just ask. oh and you can
customise scripts for itunes if youre arsed ill find the
link on the apple site.

I don't know why people would want FLAC or OGG or other
lossless on a portable MP3 player. It seems wierd. For one,
you wouldn't be able to put as much music on it, and more
importantly, if you don't have really expensive earphones,
and listen in a really quiet environment, I can't imagine
you could hear the difference that lossless provides. 192vbr
is quite enough for me and my mid-range earphones.

just remember with ipods, what you put on the ipod you cant
rip back to your pc hdd with itunes (which is putting it
very mildly, very annoying). although handy little app
called ephpod can rip the mp3s back to your pc hdd. out of
personal experience, use itunes to import files to ipod and
ephpod to export files from ipod. had to reformat my 20gb
ipod when ephpod tried importing files to it. wasnt a fun
experience.
