this soft synth is pretty cool. aside from using the
presets and a few other patches people have made i have no
fucking idea how to make my own sounds with this program.
can anybody shed some light on the subject...or maybe an
online forum or something???

whats your experience with synths? Maybe if you tell me what
you've used, I can try to compare it to that.

Absynths power is really in the envelopes... allowing you to
do evolving stuff, or rhythmic stuff.

I really think the best way to learn, is to open up a patch,
and look at how its made. Turn things on and off to see what
they are doing. It is a pretty in depth program, so maybe
finding a manual would be the best thing, to understand the
layout and how to use it.

There is also an absynth tutorial DVD out, which supposedly
goes over everything about the program. I don't know if
youre interested in purchasing it.. if not, i bet somewhere
on the vast internets someones ripped it. Might be a good
way to learn, to actually see and have someone explain.

well.......

guess what? It just so happens I am sitting here watching
the tutorial dvd as I read this. This helped much more in
the first few minutes than anything else to date. Where'd I
get it? I dl'd it from audionews.ru .

It just so happens they are accepting registration in a
couple of days.

From http://www.audionews.ru :
"registration will be available from 02.12.2005 07:00 GMT
till 03.12.2005 07:00 GMT

I'm an absynth freak, I bought it. about 80% of my music is
made with absynth. including beats.
In the beginning I also found it a bit hard to use. but
after a while it isn't so difficult anymore once you get to
know it. I never used any presets because they are a bit
obvious. just begin right now with making your own sounds
from scratch. you can look at other patches on how they are
build. but don't modify or use any presets. just start from
the ground up. you will learn much more with that.

here's a loop I made with absynth. I'm just playing one note
here. everything is done with the envelopes. no samples
used. the freaking of the beat is done with just adjusting
the main tempo of absynth.

I wish they could build an external processor for absynth
that allowes you to generate tones with analogue circuitry,
then converts the signal to digital sending it back through
for processing and modulation. It sounds pretty good, but
analogue still has that extra thickness and baditude that no
digital gear can touch.

Yeah, thats the business right there.
How many envelopes did you use?

I used to love using absynth for pads, but never really got
into absynth 3. I should give it another look over. Can
someone briefly surmise the differences between it and
absynth 1 (in terms of functionality, not behind the scenes
processing efficiency stuff)? Ta.

hmm i cant remember if I had 1, or only 2. I might have had
one, but then upgraded soon after... so I dont really
remember what 2 has that 1 doesnt.

oh wait, yes, 2 has grainular and sample playback. (and
probably lots of other stuff)

3 has audio input (so it can be used as an effect), a
fractalizing osc (you know how you could fracatlize
waveforms in the waveform editor? same thing basically, but
you can do it in real time.

ummmm frequency shifter (like a ring mod, but instead of
both the sum and difference, you hear either just the sum,
or just the difference)

dont remember if there was a multi tap delay in 2... if not,
its now in 3.

also an echo effect, and a resonator effect (up to 3, with 4
different resonating types)

thats all I can think of right now...

but yeah, its hot as hell.

the interface turned me off at first (the new glowy kind of
colors) cause i thought it would hurt my eyes, but after
like, a day, I didnt even notice anymore.

Its takes a bit of getting used to like any program but it
really doesnt take that long once you get your feet wet. Its
a nice program!

the only real complaints I have, is that there is not
keyscaling function that is just like a knob. you have to go
an manual set the amount for each not. horribly rediculous.
I took the time to do all notes divided equally, and saved
it as a patch. so I can copy paste it if i need it. but that
doesnt allow for changing the intensity of the keyscaling.

also, i wish there was a key command to switch between each
window. i hhope its in an update (whenever the next one is)

I only use it for basic things currently. I just started
getting into it but i could see where its limits occur.

What is your favorite piece of software currently?

well, I guess logic, since its my main base.

for the price, you get so much, sequencing, audio editing, a
long list of plug-ins for production (some quality ones),
and built in synths, sampler, and drum machine.

Both the drum machine (the ultrabeat, which combines
analogue percussion design, and sample playback etc) is
great for making your own drum sounds, and also the
physical modling synth (sculpture) is amazing.

Id say sculpture is my favorite synth.

the es2, there built in standard synth is good too. Sounds
good, and barely takes up any cpu. Its my workhorse synth,
for standard synth sounds.

But I do love absynth, because its so unique, although due
to CPU usage (im on a powerbook, id die for a G5) I have to
use it sparingly.

and the ultra super best part about these, is that since
they are built into logic, EVERY single function is
automatable.

its FANtastic.

with absynth, you have to go and assign a paramater to a
control driven envelope, and then go to your sequencer, and
select the # from the list, which corresponds to that
paramater etc

with all of these, the automation menu is split into
sections (like, osc, filter, etc etc) and then it has all
the functions, and youre ready to go.

those vsts look like they're going to jump out of my
computer screen and attack me... the design of each is
unique... similar to that of MOTU's MX4 and Mach Five

here's a picture on how the envelopes look like.
LAZY_TITLE
what you also can do is record some separate hits in one
file and then import that one file in absynth. then you can
trigger parts of the sample with the envelopes so you can
make a comepletly new drumloop with that with all the
filtermodulation and stuff you can do. it's the shizz

Wow, they're suprisingly simple impulse envelopes for such a
complex sound.

At the moment I'm still trying to wrap my head around the
differences between envelopes, LFOs, and LFO envelopes in
Absynth.

good stuff!
