For a while now I've been working on a very modular and
portable generative music system using reaktor 5 and a
sequencer that supports vst-hosting and midi-routing.

It's very portable in the sense that it let's you use almost
any vsti for its sound-generation and also has multi-channel
instrument-outs so you can modulate the sounds however you
want with whichever vst you want to use.

The core of it is a groove generator that has multiple
control points that controls parametres like time
signatures, beat intensity, shuffle-amount, bpm,
humanization, snare-flamming/triggering, fills,
breakdown/buildp-rate etc. The cool thing is that the
"groove-envelope" is used to control anything you want, like
basslines, melodies and the lot.

This "track" is mostly made out of envelope controlled
automation that increases the parametres to make the track
constantly build like a crescendo. The first couple of
minutes isn't really that interesting compared to how it
evolves further on.

impakt_-_Arieture

All kinds of input is appreciated.

ps. This can also be used to create any kind of music,
electro, acid etc. It all depends on your soundgenerators,
load up a 303 emulator and let the acid be "quantized" by
the groove generator to create highly dynamic 303lines that
follows the beat etc.

writing as it goes on

the dragging stuff here is nice... just now it turned into
running... for some reason, I want to add this to some
pixely images of running and walking zombies trying to get
someone.

oh, now there are things in the way, and he needs to jump
over them and some of them are alive and have to be killed.

he kills them with his fist, which is the size of his body.

new level. a jungle.. oo! there's a monkey hanging from the
tree.. OH WATCH OUT! IT'S THROWING COCONUTS!

dodge dodge.. dodge

lava.

why is there lava in the jungle? I don't know

a multitude of monkeys.

running out of time...

out of the jungle again... it was a short jungle... back to
the zombies but there are more advanced zombies... some of
them have weapons.

getting closer to the city stage... maybe the suburbs where
everyone are zombies. some of the zombies have motorcycles.

oh it's the boss! he's in a tank shooting homing missiles at
you.

shoot his gas tank!!!

he's using his machine gun.

he's dead.

the city level. a barricade. they shootin'! / I made you
look / you a slave to a page in my rhyme book. they think
you're a zombie that's trying to invade the city.

fleeing through a pipe?

pipe filling up with zombies. oops.

jump! you're in mid-air.. thank god you had that parachute,
eh?

I'm actually playing something on a sliding sine thingie
that works quite nicely with the track.. try something out.

all that aside, it's a good track.. a bit too beat-oriented,
but still quite awesome, considering how you did it!

hehe.. I'd have to get a complete feel for the track before
I could record it, as it shifts its beat at times.. I could
post a few snippets where I get it in beat, though, just to
give you a sense of what I'm thinking would work.. it's
nothing much, just a normal sine melody line... kind of slow
and.. well.. it's kind of more like my own stuff, so you may
want to do something completely different... heh...

I had the same problem with the gaps when I listened to it
through my browser, but when I downloaded it and listened to
it on winamp the gaps were gone. By gaps, I mean that the
song plays for a few seconds and then pauses, then resumes -
it's pretty irritating, but after downloading it and hearing
it properly, it was quite nice. So I suggest downloading it,
to anyone who is hearing gaps or silences.

ELLEN!!!!!!!! you're back!!

impakt: Nice track, that sugary little melody pinging around
at the 4-5 minute mark is great and goes well with the
morphing beats. I also really like the part around 9:45
when it really takes off. Alot of the really cluttered
moments remind me of Phthalocyanine, which is a good thing.
Some of the transitions are a little abrupt.. they might be
less so if you shortened the more repetetive parts that
precede them so the change wouldn't be so shocking. Still,
great idea and track, good work.

It took a couple of minutes to draw the envelopes and open
up vsti's and configure them for sound generation. I haven't
really "planned" the track at all, it's much more like a
tech-demo.

r40f: It works in mostly every sequencer that supports
vst(i) and midirouting, I've only tested it in ableton live
5.0.1 and FL studio 5.0.2 though.

Uviol: Yeah, those abrupt changes could be taken care of by
drawing "better" envelopes. The melody is also generated by
the plugin, but I use reaktors kaleidoscope for the actual
sound generation.

Futureimage: Yeah, I know fruity mostly inside out, so I'm
able to to do whatever I want with it withing a few moments.
I love it.

it sounds like an interesting process, and it definitely had
interesting results. I think I understand your point about
better envelopes. I suppose the smoother you make them, like
more 'joints' in the envelope line, the more fluid the
transition? I have not messed with the programs you're
using so I may be way off.

the melody sounded great, I didn't notice any abrupt
transitions there, although it may have been because of the
prominence of the drums in the mix.

Points: 5764 Status: Lurker | Followup to uviol: #01783516 | Show recordbag

Yeah, you're right. I could use much more time to create
better joints and build-ups to create a "normal" track. But
by using the correct sound-generators I can also make
envelopes for the actual sound-parametres so the sound
morphs along with the beat etc.

Gotcha. like I said, interesting stuff. I imagine it's a
tough call whether to favor the instinctive need to make a
'normal' sounding track or the theoretical need for 'purity'
in the composition process, regardless of end product.
nevertheless, I think you've got a great start and you're
making some very listenable stuff through these somewhat
'impersonal' methods. I'll look forward to hearing more!

so is it just a whole lot of programming that goes into
making a system like this? the demo ... well sounds like a
demo but it's cool cause it shows off what the thing is
capable of really. very awesome. i have always had the
interest in generative stuff i could still have a certain
amount of control on, but never had the know-how on where to
start.

I started by checking out online rhythm-generators, looking
at their sourcecode etc to see how they work in principle.
Then I started building something to work the same way in
reaktor and keeping in mind that if I want to control it, I
need to use a lot of user-controlled variables to affect
it.

If you have reaktor I suggest you take a look at the
EZ-Rhythm ensemble to see how something like this
works.

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2005-11-22 03:43 [#01784555]
Points: 18042 Status: Lurker

Do you take a similar approach in your own ensemble -
populating random patterns into sequencers - or are you
doing something like frequency dividing a clock signal with
a variable divisor to create variations and retriggers?

offline impakt from where we do not speak of! on 2005-11-22 04:05 [#01784573]
Points: 5764 Status: Lurker | Followup to fleetmouse: #01784555 | Show recordbag

It's like a combination of them really, I use divisors on
the clock signal for the main rhythm(kick/snare) and some
"controlled" randomness to create fills/percussion that gets
quantized by different variables like fill-type / intensity
/ flamming etc. The retriggering is done by dividing the
mainclock into a randomly selected
retrigger-style(4,4,4,8,8,16) etc.

The permutation function isn't working exactly like I want
it, yet. I'm trying to write a good linear permutation
function that advances the beat bar by bar in relation to
the value of the permut. variable.

Ghosthits are more or less random at the moment, with
different velocities etc.

The intensity knob adds more percussive elements to the
pattern.

offline fleetmouse from Horny for Truth on 2005-11-22 10:43 [#01784870]
Points: 18042 Status: Lurker

Ah, very interesting. I figured it wasn't JUST clock
division... does your permutation function write values to a
table or are you using the new snap value arrays?

When you're satisfied with this you should upload it to the
library. Who knows, it could end up in Electronic
Instruments volume 3, like what happened with Remmer's
Limelite (they credited him and I'm assuming paid him
something as well).

i think with some serious editing, and maybe some melody,
you could turn this into something really listenable. you
need to give this cyber-monster a soul.
