to be able to play from three sources?
immediately if you have a three channel mixer, just mix ambient...hehehe

some people can beat match immediately, like my friends psycho ex-gfriend who mixed hrvatski's vatstep dsp into squarespusher the first time she touched his decks (that sounds dirty)
some people take a while...it depends on your ear really !

instantly, if you're doing ambient. with beats it's a whole different matter. I've been trying, but it's kinda tricky making sure that everything is synced.
It took me about 3 years to get to the point where I could start experimenting with more sources. I'm not mastering the technique yet, but it's not as difficult as it was back then

melodies are easier to get a grasp on at first
my advice is start with something basic such as house or dnb just to get the idea of hearing which deck is going faster / slower than the other - its annoying - and if youre drunk its a total loss (in my case anyway)

yeah, im not that much into techno really..i love to mix more ambient type of music with ocasionall beats..preferably something really abstract..the thing that bothers me the most is that im so preoccupied with searching for tracks prelistening them that i don't much attention to the output so im not really sure what it sounds like..do you get used to that after a while?

haha, not really. I'm usually a few tunes ahead when I mix, so there's not too much attention to what's actually playing :)

haha, exactly..it's odd to watch people dance infroont of you and you don't even hear what they're dancing to. but i can start doing radio dj sessions and since i wouldn't have to entertain the crowd i thought i'd do my thing of abstract a bit more demanding music.. maybe i could study it a bit infron and prepare the whole thing upfroont or something..i don't haver a mixer at home so that's a bit shit..

well it depends on how you do your set
there are sets on the fly where you dont hear what they hear but then there are pre-planned sets where you mix without previewing tracks - both are great for obvious reasons
i prefer doing pre-planned non-headphones jams for people who like to dance - but for more ambient / relaxed / abstract stuff headphones and spontaneity are a must
if you wanna do stuff like youre describing get a good mixer and a kaoss pad - make sure your mixer has effect send and return buttons so you can tweak the incoming track but the current one playing is left alone !!! - this would be sweeeeeeeeeeet jammers

i think they have a mix pult like that at the station, but the thing is im very new at this stuff so im having trouble playing from two sources already..there are just too many knobs and everything if i'd want to do it properly..i definitely want to get a mixer of my own though, so i can play around and get used ot it.

Unless they're filtered, or "uncrowded" bits of a track, or all 3 are perfectly (or at least identically) quantised, 3 rhythm tracks combined generally sounds messy. Not to say it's not worth learning to do, it's just that you shouldn't get disheartened when you can't even get 3 identical bpm tracks, in the same key, to sound good, you often can't.
I'd never try to build a set around 3 channels, more do it once or twice a set to show off to the spotters and the rest of the time do it for additional cueing up (a->b->c in very quick succession for example) or using the 3rd channel for scratching/samples, a repetative loop the other stuff is matched to. Eg a minimal drum machine loop that runs for 3 or 4 tracks duration.
Have fun and remember, DJ trixter uses 6 decks, the maniac.

right, i don't want anything fancy like that..personally im not into technique itself..i can appreciate if the dj is skilled ofcourse, but im more into the music part of it. i'd need the third channel only for some ambient sounds and stuff like that, just so it makes the whole thing sound heavier and to make it appear like it's one long track instead of changing songs..something to chill to i suppose. the thing is i only just started doing this so i can get a bit confussed here and there and it''s pretty likely i'd make a mistake..it's one thing when you play at the club for ppl to dance to dance to but it's a bit different when it comes to radio..i guess the sound will be much clearer so it will be obvious when i make a mistake..i just need practisei suppose.

practice def. helps - but so does a third channel
the hardest thing is making it interesting with two records and one mixer, no effects, no fail safe go to third channel for noises that make it seem mysterious and interesting

I've done 2 turntable and the third channel was a laptop with ableton live on, basically just used as a sampler.
I agree with Euphonic, the main thing with a third channel is aside from having a safety net if a mix goes wrong, is that it's so much easier to do additional stuff (like cue up a synth/drum machine), without being rushed by having to cancel it, switch back to the other turntable, mix that in, then assign it to the now free channel and try again.
I've used a drum machine with a 2 channel (2 decks on the phonos and the drum machine on the right hand side line in). It worked okay, but it meant you could only use the drum machine half of the time.

that just sounds too complicated for someone like me atm..though, i was thinking of using laptop for the 3rd channel as i doubt i'd be able to use three turntables or cd players, not to mention synths or drum machines.,laptop seems the most convenient for that :)

just turn em all on and start using em - itll sound like shit but who cares - youll learn
another good thing to do is record your sets, make em mp3's, listen to em, and think about where you could have improved etc etc - this will help you build sets that have themes, or make mixes, or just get better in general - this helped a TON with my scratching practice

The intro (4:00 - 15:00) I used for the xltronic radiosession even consists of parts where I managed to mix 4 songs at the same time. If you ask me the trick is to find the right songs that match with each other and keep an eye on the volume level.
