My laptop is broken, it can't can't start windows.

It says:windows 2k could not start because the following
file is missing\WINNT\System32\DRIVERS\pci.sys

Is this bad?

get a startup disc where you also add any versions of the
file pci.sys you can find. start the computer from the disc
and copy the files into that folder one by one until one of
them works (provided there actually is more than one
version of the file).

Ok, so that sounds easy enough. Would i lose anything by
doing it? Also can i use any start up disc?

if you just use a regular startup disc (windows has this
option to create one somewhere, so you can do it on any
machine with windows), it will just give you an OS for
fixing stuff...

oh, wait.. have you tried the f8 during startup thingie? the
one that allows you to go into "secure" mode?

just press f8 continuously.. it doesn't matter if the
computer starts beeping...

No, i am say that when i can turn it on it dosen't start
windows. So, i think i have a hardware problem as well as
the windows problem.

try the startup disc too then, and if it still isn't
working, it's probably hardware.. I don't know how it is
with laptops, but if you can open it, just check that you
haven't jiggled loose any wires...

offline Skink from A cesspool in eden on 2005-11-13 15:37 [#01777188]

Problem being is that i don't know how to open it safely. I
know next to nothing about computers. I will try the startup
with the disc. If after that i can get my dad to look at it,
he works with pcs and such.

could be a PSU issue or a failing hard drive. not being very
good at starting up is sort of worrying :(

from it?

offline Skink from A cesspool in eden on 2005-11-13 19:37 [#01777286]

Is your laptop a Dell?

Hahahahaha. This shit happened a couple times on my
parent's Dells. Turn them off fine, next time you turn them
on, some fucking system file is missing and my parents claim
that I downloaded "A VIRUS" or something. I don't touch
Dells anymore because of this shit.. It can be repaired
though.

Ok, cool. That's very good to hear.

I could really use a new laptop though, something slightly
faster.

i haven't heard anything good about dell laptops... then
again, i also don't know anything about computers.

Well, as far as i know they are all good until something
goes wrong. You can't get parts for them in the pc store,
because they only sell via mail order.

What the fuck is that about?

ah, i see. yeah, my dell (pc) died this past spring. it
was a real nightmare. i've been running linux on it (NOT
RECOMMENDED - AVOID AT ALL COSTS!) since then. anyway, i
hope you get it working soon! it would be terrible to lose
important files.

i wouldn't recommend running linux on a delll lappy cos
dell's os is utterly, stupidly, hardware-specific. OEM
versions of everything!

hardware-wise they are very reliable machines though.

I suppose we'll see what happens. Thanks everyone though. I
do feel slightly less worried about things now.
