[Montreal] Best music store closing. :-(

CD Esoterik is closing. This is the best place in Montreal
where you can find electronic, experimental, indie,
freejazz, noise, jandek etc. all under one roof.

I refuse to shop at HMV where they at least have some
electronic and indie because they file Autechre under drum
and bass.

Ordering online just isn't the same. You don't get a thrill
of fear wondering if the clerk will sneer at your purchase
and say "oh, that."

They're supposed to email me if they reopen somewhere but
they look like slackers who will spend months of
unemployment listening to Albert Ayler and smoking opium.

stuff like that sucks... I hope they never close down the
"local store" here... the large chains suck for getting good
music, and they don't stock vinyl by default, so it would
always take lots of extra time to get it...

This is sad news. Even if I shop a lot on the internet, I
wish my local record store never closes becuz I can find
good used CDs for very cheap. (for example Ultimatum by
Murcof (milited to 1000 copies) for 5€ or Brace Yourself
Remixes 12" for 3€)

Once you factor in taxes and shipping, buying online is
rarely much cheaper. And online stores will never have shit
like local artists who put stuff in the store on
consignment. It's a hub where you can find rare CDs and old
collectible vinyl, concert tickets, DVDs... shit, you know
what they had for sale once was the sheet music to John
Cage's 4'33".

surely there's got to be at least one or two other really
good independent stores in montreal. just go haunt them and
tell them to step it up.

Well I found some good music there, and the guys were
friendly and had good recommendations. I can see how you
wouldn't be impressed at first glance - two and a half
aisles of racks plus some other stuff on the wall and in a
glass counter, a few bins of vinyl - it was humble.

i heard they had some pretty good stuff, but in the end,
it's all about having a decent relationship with the staff
so you can get them to order stuff in for you on a timely
basis, and get cool recommendations.

that's the very thing that signifies a good record store! a
seemingly small selection compared to the larger
chains (but much larger if you look deeper), but with staff
so knowledgeable that you'd think they were a 1000 years old
(the time it'd take to listen to all the stuff they've
heard).

Yeah you could talk to them about everything from Sun Ra to
Moondog.

Mr. Deadeight is correct, I have to cultivate relationships
with other clerks in other stores...

"from Sun Ra to Moondog. "

isn't that pretty much like saying; "everything from aphex
to autechre"? :)

They... they could only afford to stock two albums at a
time. :-(

But they were always tastefully chosen.

Ah man this sucks!

Leon was the king shit meng!

It`s because of the location! How the fuck are people
suppose to find the store if it`s UNDER THE ENTRANCE OF A
BUILDING. Isn`t the shop above them like some Salon or GNC
store or something?

Why don`t they move to a place where the rent is cheaper?
Saint Catherines must cost mucho rent meng.

I`m surprised why no one has started a benefit show or
something to help them out. Eso is a great shop!

Atom heart is half decent so I am told. What about that new
one on Saint Lauren?

You had stuff there on consignment. :-(

Cheap Thrills on Metcalfe has a good selection. Someday that
crooked staircase is going to collapse and kill someone.

Never been to Atom Heart - I should check it out soon.

New one on saint laurent? What what?
