A dub can either be an alternate version of a track (often
soaked in delay and/or reverb, typically with some of the
vocals cut), or a 'dub plate', occassionally refered to as
just 'a dub', is a pre-release/very limited copy, usually
given to other DJs to build up hype/gauge interest before
deciding whether or not to release it. Originally dub plates
were cheap soft record pressings that only lasted about 20
times before becoming unplayable (music magazines used to
give away similar "records" on the cover), nowadays, they're
usually just CD-Rs, or even mp3s.

Oh yes, never heard of a "rub" version of a record. A rub is
a DJing technique (used either as part of a scratch, as a
flange-like effect or to re-synch a record). If it's a
particular track/remix you're thinking of, it's likely the
producer is having a bit of a laugh/punning.

eg
1. trackname
2. trackname (dub)
3. trackname (rub)

I've got a Filla Brazilla record somewhere where the remixes
are named like that.

the rub is referring to the rubbing of the vinyl while
queueing up a track. re-rub is just another word for remix
etc.
