I've listened to this track soo many times I've lost count.
I made an advent children amv for it at
animemusicvideos.org.

Interesting fact:
The violin parts are in the new Frankenstein movie.

synthesised..

Sorry, I shouldn't have written "Synthed". Should've written
"programmed".

There's a very obvious artificial quality in the strings
section...... There's a sense of disconnection between the
notes and it generally doesn't sound right. I was thinking
it'd be a piece featuring just strings, in which case i
would've rubbished it - but the drum programming makes it
alright.

yeah, is Synful Orchestra i have that synth and is the same
sound, and also samples, both methods...

Well I've gotta disagree there, seeing as I've heard its
original and composed song in a movie. Can't remember who
the film composer was. Did you read my earlier post?

And imdex, synful orchestra blows in terms of sounding like
a real orchestra, that program couldnt even come close to
reproducing the violins in szamar.

the strings are sampled

of course they are sampled

Then again film composers do sample alot and are keyboard
friendly for just about any sound.

Bottom line is they sound awesome dammit.

i say "also samples" too, both things, synthesis and real
(cuted) samples in all album, listen :)

anyway and indeed, i love the shity synthetized (orch) sound
+ real samples in all that album, melodies and programmings
are great, that's the important for me, just my opinion...

ah! and thanks for the vid, looks like an nice amateur work.

Well, its a fact that allot of the orchestral moments in
this album are not synthesized. And I'm guessing just about
none of them were produced or written by snares himself.
Much of it can probobly be found in other composers works,
specifically hungarian composers or whatever country he went
to visit. I was lucky enough to find that blip in
frankenstein. Also, for the majority of this thread I
misiterpreted 'sampled' as that could mean he just took
other peoples works rather than synthesized ><

i havent read the whole of the thread basically cos im lazy,
but i heard the majority of instruments were sampled form
records with occasional violin part added and played by
snares himself, no synthesised strings where used, least not
according to the interview i read

offline imdex from Argentina on 2005-11-09 06:25 [#01773476]

yes, i'm wrong, all orchestra sounds are 100% sampled :)

actually, all he did for that song is sample this

There really should be a FAQ about this somewhere.

A lot of the orchestral bits are samples of real classical
pieces (the bit at 2:57 in Szamar Madar is especially
familiar-sounding - from Elgar, as someone has said)
I think he has done a lot of chopping and editing in some
tracks, but I don't think he's using any synthesised
strings.

Apparently he plays the 'electric violin' somewhere - I
think track 4 (Felbomlasztott ...) could be the one. But
maybe that too is a sample. Perhaps someone knows.

But yes, a great track, one of my favorites this year too. A
lot of skill and care went into his sample chopping and
choosing.

*researches*

In this Wire interview:
LAZY_TITLE

He describes how the sound is a combination of samples of
famous composers, and samples of his own violin playing:

"These inspirations don't disappear, they eat me up until I
act on them. I did pick up the violin, although I would say
I am pretty shit, would record like 50 takes of a phrase
until I got it right, again the beauty of samplers! I had
played around with a violin bow on guitars and basses quite
a bit in the past so the bowing was easy, it's the fingering
that gets me, my hands are are maybe too big."

"I did sample Elgar's cello concerto. Sampled bits from here
and there, even some Bartok. Sometimes intentionally,
sometimes to accentuate my own playing."

I love it. He's done precisely what I would do, which is to
marry the floaty shoegazer vocal together to the pristinely
clear righteous drill.

Hmmmm, that's pretty good. I like this album a lot more than
some of his previous works like Ass Hate Dog Sputum and
Child Corpse Socket Rape. It almost aproaches the intensity
of his earlier Boiled Organ Nun Meat.
