just a curious thread really it seems that the two scenes intermingle quite alot. by avante garde i mean stuff like SOTL, GYBE sigur ros etc etc it just seems to me that alot of people who listen to electronica type stuff listen to this sorta thing aswell
DO you listen to both or just one or neither do you have clowns shoes?

avant-garde isn't really a genre, though. it just describes new and innovative ideas.

Yeah, I think the whole post-rock scene is very intermingled with the IDM scene. I listen to both in the same way, a lot of the time they are just the same ideas being made with different intruments and structures. One of the common features is focus on texture, I guess.

yer i think your right
when i used teh term avante garde i did it VERY loosely, ive always grown up calling mogwai and what not avante garde i guess it is post rock some people would even say indie i dunno but i think you get what i mean.
in autum i always go through my post rock phase its the best music for the season, jangly guitar and windy it suits the cold but in a good way. but yer there are such crossovers between the two i think mum being a good example of the post rock electronic mix

Yes, the lion's share of 'our' type of electronica, that is IDM as opposed to clubbier dance-trance, etc, is avant garde almost from the get go. At least it started that way..
Electronic music started because of the new music-making tools that became available. With the new set of tools came entirely new working methods, which in turn led to some very unorthodox sounding stuff. In that sense, I'd say that for a while all electronic music was avant garde.
As far as post-rock goes, there is undoubtedly a lot of crossover, and I think it does stem, as clint pointed out, from the fact that alot of it is instrumental and has a focus on the sounds and textures as opposed to blatant pop sensibility. Look at labels like Thrill Jockey, for example.. Tortoise, Mouse on Mars, Sea and Cake, Nobukazu Takemura, etc. Same with Warp; Broadcast, Stereolab, etc.

There's nothing even remotely avant-garde about Sigur Rós; it's by-the-numbers crowd-pleasing whiny tripe at its best.

Von TRIES to be avant garde, their other albums don't even bother.
I like post rock but I can't hear anything avant garde about any of it. Avant garde seems to be a pretty pliable term though. I can see why somebody could call it that.

Saying "the best post rock band of the moment" is like saying "the most happening skiffle troupe out there", irrelevant at best.

what is SOTL? fuck acronyms please.
i wouldn't have considered Godspeed You Black Emperor to be avant-garde, but i can't say i really know. if avant-garde is what r40f said (and it's what i think too), it's hard to tell if anything really is avant-garde when it's some years old... new ideas always get re-used... that's probably one of the reasons why some "classic" albums i discover years after they were released doesn't sound as great as people say it really is for me: i've already heard this kind of music from later releases, so it's nothing new to me, and just because it's the "original" doesn't always make it sound better.
now i'm not really replying to your subject; i think that many people here like experimental music because "idm" is already experimental (or at least, it was at the beginning). this said, i've never been to a chemical brothers (for example) forum, maybe they like experimental music too... (i like the chemical brothers as well, at least their first two albums...)

what cafuffel about the term avante garde i always read it as experimental music or music without a narative or intended naritive anyhow but thats irrelevant as i said i dindt eman that specifically its just what i call it. as with all genres you could call anything pretty much anything else or even invent your own genre to name it i am the founding member of the pretentious-core movement ;) (j/k)
anyhow just thought it was interesting how the two divisions of music seemed to cross over so well, i think its grown more from the ambient side of things
anyhow la dee da
