FINALLY SOMEONE GETS IT

The old world has officially collided with the new, the iPod
nano-toting city mouse has mated with Victrola-friendly
country mouse, and Merge Records has devised a scheme to
keep styluses fashionable well into the 21st century. The
label has released the Clientele's Best New Music'd Strange
Geometry in a format palatable to both vinyl aficionados and
micro-music tech junkies. Jeepers! How can this be? Easy. It
all comes down to a little marvel of human achievement known
as the piece of paper.

Slow down, breathe, and appreciate: all LP copies of Strange
Geometry include said piece of paper, which entitles the
purchaser to a one-time download of the entire album in
digital format, straight from Merge's state-of-the-art
website. The label plans to do the same thing to the LP
version of the forthcoming Robert Pollard solo record, From
a Compound Eye, with both versions scheduled to come out on
January 24. If the promotion succeeds, the label will
continue with future releases. Talk about catering to one's
clientele, ha.

About bloody time. I've been doing this for years (buying
vinyl, then DLing the MP3 of it afterwards for
portability/use in work etc.) I'm glad a record label has
seen sense and now allows users to do this legitmately,
rather than having to "pirate" the release, or go through
the rigmarole (and often low sound quality) involved in
recording from your turntable to a PC then Mp3ing the
resulting .wav.

"From a Compound Eye" is an interesting title, what's the
link (if any) to BoC's "Tears from The Compound Eye"?

That was so badly written that, I'm not kidding, it took me
11 re-reads to work out what the hell it was on about.

i dont give shit one about those groups, or how badly you
think its written

the idea that some record label FINALLY got hip to what some
of us do is great

like "ceri" said - now i dont have to pirate the digital
version of the analog releases i buy - its PERFECT for
someone like me...insanely perfect !!!

So let me get this straight, you want to buy analog releases
with dust clicks and rolled off treble, then you want to
download MP3s with higher sound quality...?

The entire Merge catalog is available at Emusic in glorious
Lame VBR mp3s for less than 25 cents a track.

WHAT THE HELL PEOPLE

especially the part about higher sound quality mp3s, yes.

no - what i want is to buy vinyl then have a portable
version - its hard to listen to vinyl when im riding to and
from work, grocery shopping, walking (anywhere), not too
easy you dig?

giving me a portable version i could play for other people
and spread the love with in an easier fashion is what i want
- ive had to resort to pirating and recording / encoding
myself

people like myself would pirate less if at all if more
people did this

im starting a record label and plan to only release vinyl
and give mp3's away for free - but to everyone not just
people who buy the releases - its the way of the future

how hard is it to record the lp onto your computer yourself?
I don't mind labels doing the rips for me, but honestly, I
couldn't bother with anything less than flac, so I guess I
will have to do it myself until that happens
