The spirit of John Peel

The latest Mishkas show is available for
download..... check it out

For those of you who haven't tuned in yet, the main aim of
Mishkas is to "evoke the spirit" of John Peel. When he died,
a huge hole was left behind, and we'd like to help fill it.
I use the word "help" because we are by no means the only
people doing this, and of course we couldn't ever expect to
live up to the legendary Peel. We want to listen to and play
good music by unsigned and independent artists / labels -
that is all.

Go forth and listen!

Excellent :) Let me know what you think.

Sorry for the probably rather arrogant sounding John Peel
stuff. It was just my attempt to get people to read my
thread, because normally people don't :)

Hijacking an honourable deadman's name to get people to read
your thread and listen to your radio show.

That's real admirable, that is.

I don't think it was a crude cash-in on his name. The whole
principle of Mishkas playing new and often unsigned music is
very similar to the late Mr. Peels show.

Some good tracks on this. Glad to see more United Kingz,
they will be big in future, keep an eye out for 'em.

"Skitchy - Don't have this girl" is awesome.

Yeah man, both fantastic tracks. There's so much unsigned
hip-hop/drum n bass talent out there. i guess the market's
saturated with it, but it's really exciting when some
unsigned unknown sends us stuff that sounds fecking
amazing.

An amazing independent hip hop-ish record label to look out
for is Buttercuts. They are putting out some excellent
music.

just because the principle is the same, how does that not
make it a crude cash-in?

I suppose it doesn't.

Still, I can understand Manic wanting to get people to look
at these threads. People bitch about a lack of good music
threads and how off topic stuff runs to hundreds of posts
and music ones like this are lucky to reach a dozen. I
honestly think the mishkas shows (I know I am biased as I'm
sometimes on them) are some of the best "spam"
showcases/mixes that get posted here and the lack of
attention they get is criminal.

Agreed, but at least this one isn't charging £10 a head for
entry to an indie club on the grounds that it's playing
music John Peel did (ie no different from any other indie
club night).

I severely tempted to do a track called "The Spirit of John
Peel" and submit it to Mishkas, so that it could be played
and then, perhaps, it would justify titling the thread this
way.

I agree wholeheartedly that the way the music scene has
turned Peel's death into a giant circle-jerk is deplorable.
The afformentioned clubs are the main culprits, but the way
musicians have been jumping on the bandwagon as a way of
getting more media exposure is almost as bad.

Anyway, back on topic, the track by cathode is very good
too.

"Sorry for the probably rather arrogant sounding John

Jesus Christ, I'm sorry if I've offended anyone. I genuinely
didn't mean to piss anyone off, and I'm sorry if you thought
it was offensive.

I think "cashing-in" is too strong a term, I am making no
money from this after all......

When I set out to make Mishkas, I was genuinely inspired by
John Peel and by the "hole" he left behind when he died.
That's what I was referring to - in my second post I
realised this may have come across as rather arrogant, so
with tongue firmly in cheek I tried to make it seem less so
by jokingly saying that the reason I'd used his name was to
attract people to the thread.

In fact, when I first made this thread and gave it it's
title, I didn't do it in an attempt to "attract" people to
the thread (any more than with any other title). It was a
genuine reference to Mr Peel.

So, I wrote the thread with good, innocent intentions and
then realised comparing myself with John Peel was a bit OTT.
My subsequent attempt at humour, which was supposed to make
me come across as less conceited, appears to have backfired
and made me look like a cynical namedropper (for want of a
better term) - something I'd never intended to be.

So, in short, I'm sorry if I offended anyone and I hope
you'll realise now that the joke didn't really "translate"
well onto the internet and will forgive me.

Lol talk about making a mountain out of a molehill... I
loved Peel but can't see how such an off the cuff thread
title can offend people!

Anyways, will download soon, manicminer.
