Oblivion
Don't know if anyone's a fan of Morrowind or any of the other Elder Scroll games, but this looks fantastic. Check out the vids if you can (the servers are being hammered since the vids were released a few days ago, but if you can, grab 'em!). I've been monitoring this game's progress for over a year and it's nice to finally get a taste of the gameplay.
I loved Morrowind, and didn't expect to as I didn't think of myself as a D&D/PC RPG fan, but it was probably the most engrossing game I've played. Oblivion sure looks superb, and if the gameplay's anything like Morrowind then I'll be addicted.
Check out those trees in the forest in vid #2! Yum!

Morrowind was one of the best games ever. I'm definitely going to get this.
I haven't decided whether to buy an Xbox 360 or upgrade my PC in order to play it.

I liked Elder Scroll 2 Daggerfall. It was really fun to rob the weapon stores and then kill all the guards when they tried to arrest you.
However, these days I think MMORPG's are better, such as World of Warcraft and Guild Wars, because playing with other people is just so much fun! Plus, when your guy becomes a bad ass, you get to show him (her) off to other people.

It depends what you want. MMORPGs are fine for battles and all that, but for an engrossing story, and exploration there's nothing than can touch a well-made single player game yet. This is what I loved about Morrowind - the focus on exploration and knowledge of the map rather than just training/levelling up and knocking heads.
I'm rather worried about the apparent console-orientation of Oblivion though, with the compass and map telling you where the action is, and the instant-travel thing, trying to appeal more to casual gamers (no denying it, you had to play Morrowind for a very long time to cover all the guild quests etc). I might be wrong, but it looked like the guy in the vid was using as X-Box, by the way he was controlling it, plus mentioning the stick uses etc. I'm sure it'll be cool on PC though, as long as the hardware's up to scratch...
So anyone check out the vids yet? If you use the USA mirror 3 you shouldn't have to wait to dl. Apparently one of the criticisms levelled at the game when these vids were first seen half a year ago or so was the lack of fluid animations joining actions together. It's apparently been addressed since, but we'll see.

Morrowind stole an entire summer from me, such an incredibly addictive game. I can't wait for Oblivion... well, actually I can because I have lots of coursework that won't get done if it's released this Christmas!

Morrowind was great but overall Daggerfall was more impressive.

I did see the E3 vids a while ago, before they were officially released and it excited me so much. Apparently some of the people that designed Thief (another one of my gaming loves) implimented the thievery aspects of Oblivion, so it's bound to rock.
It's also going to have a soundtrack by Jeremy Soule which contributes to about 85% of the general atmosphere. Hope there'll be more than 20 minutes of it this time, heh.

Nice eh? Best forest I've ever seen in a game, that's for sure.
I'm betting that a Christmas release = February 2006 or something though.

yeah - i wonder how often she gets pissed off with her dog, if it's a regular occurence or if it really was a freak ai moment. i guess the speech was tied into it so it might not be as random as they'd like us to think. still, nice that characters actually do things now rather than either stand still and wait or follow a set path.
they still talk to you when you pass them though don't they? i thought it might make more sense that they respond only if you're looking directly at them.

from what I read this time round all characters have 24-hour schedules, they do their own thing and the game keeps track of who is doing what while you're not there.
sounds like something that would be a CPU-crippler, but this game certainly will be that anyway.

Got a DVD with 20 minutes of footage, it's pretty damn sweet. The character animations seem kind of awful though. They postponed it to Q2 2006, so no luck in getting it for the Xbox 360 launch.

all the available interviews with the Oblivion production team confirm that "thief" improvement.
I've been checking the morrowind ocean of plugins and mods for a while. Actually I've had Morrowind installed, like, all the time. You can't get bored with it.

I played Morrowind and got bored of it after a short time... after having played WoW, EQ, and some of the other online RPGs it feels like a step back playing single player again.
The classics like baldurs gate, might and magic 5-7, even the more recent divine divinity are all solid single player RPGs that have a lot of replay value, however.

The character animations seem kind of awful though.
This is one of the main criticisms the vids faced, here recently on the ES BB. Apparently it's been refined since the vids were released, but they'd say that wouldn't they. We'll have to wait and see if the animation's any better.
And folks on there are talking about delays until April 2006...

I've just watched the vids....it all looks promising. The forest lighting is amazing.
You can't say much until you've played your first game actually. One bit i don't like much is the instant travel. I'm almost sure that mod makers will invent something, a travel/communication device. A bus maybe ? :)
