So it's my birthday today and I got a new synth:) It's an evolver,by Dave Smith, the guy who pretty much invented midi and did the famous SCI prophets...
This thing is tiny! And the sounds that come out of it are so awesome. the amazing sounds per square inch measurement is great!
Ok down sides, its mono, and the 3 LED display is slightly cryptic sometimes, but I've been on it for about 4 hours today and it rocks, and it makes a lot more sense now what everything does, so think in a couple of days I will have it nailed.
Value for money is off the scale, this thing is fat! I seriously would recommend that you get one. I've got today and tomorrow of work to play with it, oh and drink my 12x litre cans of CainsFA. :p
If you want a small beast which can make some nice, nasty, wierd and cool sounds get an evolver.

I've heard samples and I know it can make some great burbling analog tones, but can it go GWAAAAAAAHHHHHHH in a manner that removes eyebrows and kills household pets?

I was thinking about getting one of those about a year back, but was put off by not having heard a review of it by anyone I knew. Glad it is good though and happy birthday Dave.

im afraid my eyebrows are still intact, but if i had the guts to twist those knobs to 11 (which they seem to go to) I'm sure there would be a rupture the the space time continuim.
Ceri, I think you would like it. Its from the same school of thought as the MS20, doesn't do everything, but what it does do, it does amazingly well.
here are some videos of it in action.

Happy birthday, it looks cool, but I imagine programming it can be very tedious unless you have a software editor for it.

FUCK!!! The Evolver is one of the awesomist little machines ever. It sounds so good (usually sounding better than any other synth that you play alongside it, so it gets tricky because its almost too good). You can get some amazing low end. Playing with the filters alone is enough to net you some of the richest drones you can get.
Have you tried running external gear through it yet? You can use audio inputs for midi triggers with it, so if you run a guitar through it, you can use that as a gate for the sequencer, and then you can sequence the delay rates, LFO's, feedback ammounts and filters.
I really love the fact that some of the small companies out there are finally starting to build good analogue gear again.
The two things that bug me with it, are the fact that it is mono, so sometimes you could be playing away, and accidentally hit the next note while the decay for the last note is still happening, and the second note won't make a sound. Its mostly a problem when using an external sequencer that isn't in a computer, but you get used to it. Its also really easy to loose control of your sounds, just because so many parameters are controllable through the modulation routings. But seriously. Best $500 anybody could send.
I love the evolver. :) :D

Thanks everyone. I've spent quite a few hours today playing with it and it isso much fun.
its got 2x analogue synth parts, 2x wavetables, noise source, 4x16 seq, 4xLFO (synchable), VCA,VCF,'spare' filter, stereo input too :) erm yeah rather good. also has tons of demos, about 500 some are for external audio processing, some just work off internal sequences (4x16 repeating matrix and lfos) and some need midi in to make noise.
for $50 you can get a pc editor for it, i d/l the demo and it looks quite good. no crappy usb on the evolver itself, its midi sysex :) think i will buy this software too. seriously this thing is cool. very tweakable, perhaps too tweakable, i dunno.
not the best synth ever, not the best bit of gear ever, my S5000 is 1000x better, yet strangely this little box is somehow just as good as the 3U massive akai (akai = single most expensive bit of kit i have)
seriously this evolver thing is good if you want a small thing capable of:
►sh101 ish sounds ►prophet VS ish sounds ►short sampleable 1 or 2 bar rhythms (think chemical brothers maybe)
►weird sounds ►messing up external sounds ►giving your hands something to fiddle with other than you willy
►producing flanging like synthesis sounds- its got internal feedback and delay lines=very cool
►producing super dope fly sounds from something smaller than the keyboard I am typing on :)
►etc
