it's a great album - my favourite of his are: 1) live at
town hall, 2) straight, no chaser.

The monk is great

yes! mingus rocks too!

they're selling lots of monk vinyl 'round here now, though,
and I think this may be the time for me to get duplicates of
stuff...

just bought John Coltrane's "Live at the Village Vanguard."
It's nice. I love how jazz is so laid back. Like
bullshiting with your friends or something. maybe that
doesn't make since, but something about jazz makes me feel
like i'm just joking around at the lunch table back in high
school. care free. you know what i'm saiyng? i think it's
the swing.

jazz is love! (for real: the word was slang for love once
upon a time)

it's also just about the only artform where all the
greats truly are great!!!

the Monk abides. this one is on columbia right? i think i've
prolly heard it on the boxset, but i actually need to take
the time to divvy that shit up properlike and hear all of
this stuff again in album form... it's been a while.

in minneapolis there are tons of really killing jazz
musicians. i've been watching them play since 8th grade or
so. every show has that great feeling in the air. totally
different then an electronic show or a rock band. the
feeling is so real. there's not a trace of delusion or the
feeling that these musicians are out to get famous. i'm
talking about good jazz performances, i don't go see wynton
marsalis play at the orchestra hall.that's shit. i like
wyntons old stuff but now he's just playing the gig cause
it's a job.

There is an electronic producer / DJ guy in Nottingham that
goes by the name of Melodious Thunk.

Which I think is pretty cool.

Thought I'd share that with you, anyway.

stadium/large concert hall concerts never make any
sense.

we have a quite regular jazz event thingie at the student
place here and we have a festival each year called
"nattjazzen" plus random concerts from time to time... it's
awesome, but the good stuff is really expensive... I get to
see a lot of great stuff though...

larger ones.. there are concerts just about every saturday
(with some exceptions) on the student place and random other
ones.

Arve Henriksen
I stopped by the shining once, but it got boring.
Wibutee
Paal Nilssen-Love
Turanga (check Mats Eilertsen and Ernst Reijseger is amazing
on cello! I'll see Eilertsen again on saturday in a triple
bass setup.. it's him, Eivind Opsvik and Per Zanussi)
Bugge Wesseltoft
Jaga Jazzist
Ahmad Jamaal

it's <3!!!

Turanga- that's a cool name

Mats Eilersten is playing in a triple bass setup? that
sounds fucking awesome.

you're from norway then? i should've noticed. you guys
have cooler names than us americans. i wish my name was
Elvind Opsvik.

is your university hard? the reason i ask is this. I
usually bullshit my papers for my english classes, but now i
have this professor from britain that grades the british.
this semester i've realized that the american school system
has been letting my slide on barely legible research papers.
now that i have this teacher my papers are getting way
better. american universities are a total joke.

hehe.. yeah, I hope they manage to keep it interesting, and
I do not doubt their powers.. haha... triple bass will be
awesome!

yeah, i'm from norway...

well.. there's no general.. feeling that the university is
hard or any harder than anything else... I study philosophy,
though, so things are mostly left up to us: as long as we
can argue well enough for our views of things and actually
have valid arguments and reasonings, it's ok.. even in the
historical classes where we interpret older philosophers and
texts...

Jazz is some of the coolest music ever made. Thats why it
conjours those feelings

you know what's a really good record?

medeski martin and wood's "Tonic"

this might get a few frowns from people because the band has
the reputation of being a "jam" band, which is just a
stupid genre title. i think they're mostly considered a jam
band because they groove in straight time signatures and
improvise a lot. there's no vocals though and they don't
have a country/folky hippy vibe at all.

anyways. "tonic" is there acoustic record and it feature
drums, upright bass, and piano. it's really really good.
