So I want to start making music. I want to get something
before I have to go christmas shopping as then I would make
myself feel guilty about buying anything. I have about 300
dollars and am a student, so I'm guessing I could get some
discounts. Suggestions?

whats your style of composing?

mathematical, which would do well meticulously click and
placing things in grids?

free spirited, in that you want to play music like
instruments, jam (or whatever), and find the best structure
/ noises?

I'm looking for a softsynth, specifically, if that is what
you are asking.

Oh, and I tried buzz, just to goof around, and I hated it,
which may just be because it is shit.

well the only advice i can offer is how i used to make music
to how i do now

i used to use fruity loops and trackers...very point and
click, not very instrumental in terms of being able to
actually play

i use live now cause you can play everything like a
synth...its really nice in that regard...and its basic...i
like things to be simple

Use Reason, it is better than Fruity Loops

That's not very true at all.

use your 300 dollars on a soundcard and maybe a midi
controller /keyboard. then get freeware or cracked software.
(you shouldn't release stuff or make money using cracked
software, but i don't think that's an issue yet.)

Yes Fruity Loops is very easy to use but the sound quality
is not so good IMO....

Coming from a reason user I find that statement quite funny.

Here's a spectral view of a rising sine note rendered with
fruity's 256 sinc depth rendering back in version 4.
Spectral View

Not much distortion there, so in other words it's all about
your sound-source.

Oh but I wasn't talking in term of distortion.....Fruity
Loops seems to have an internal weird compression. I don't
know if it is true but it's a real problem to me when I
write drum'n'bass breaks or basses in it
I have better results using Kontakt in Cubase

fruity loops internal noises and synths etc are REAL cheesy

they're perfect if you make gay trance

but otherwise youre gonna need other instruments or samples

Skale tracker ... FREE
Awesome VST synths and effects ... FREE
Wav editor ... errr well there are no really good ones that
I know of heh ...

Go buy an Electribe with your 300 dollars, then buy some
midi cables and get some free software. BELIEVE ME its soooo
much better that way.

I was going to get reaktor.

Bad idea?

Live and Reason interest me, I dunno about FL.

Reaktor is a really cool piece of Software but seems to be
really complex.......

yeah reaktor is very intensive - its along the lines of
using max/msp's

if you want simplicity, such as i do, use live or reason

i would stear away from fruity loops simply because it gives
you a bizarre handle on making tracks, not to say it isnt
useful (i made two full length LP's, and two EP's on it) -
its just a little chintsy

Reaktor is an awesome program that works very well with a
selection of hosts, it's a safe bet.

euphonic : how does FL give you a bizarre handle on making
tracks? Give me the full lowdown please.

I got reaktor. Going merely by the fact that it seemed
pretty nice.
