I'm talking about the common occurrence of meeting new people and having this question (what kinda music are you into?) be asked. How do you describe Moondog sufficiently, or any obscure outdated indefinable artist that you are absolutely positive no one will recognize? |

The thing I really hate about the question is that its' sole purpose to put an individual into a catagory, quickly and effortlessly. The problem is, I don't belong to any generalized group (or I can't think of any), nor can I be squeezed into one by force. It's a source of pride and woe, I suppose. |

I did that on one occasion, it worked better theoretically. They listened to about 5 seconds of it and started talking over it then turned on their own music over mine. |

They also refuse to believe they don't know of it, because they always believe that they know about everything in music. So when I say, "ohhhhh, it's pretty eclectic and really obscure" they first ask what eclectic means, then force me to list a few...so I say "um, ovuca?...or astrobotnia..., oh and aphex twin" and they say "oh yeah I know aphex twins" and then I give a silent cry. |

I'm seriously considering a pamphlet, complete with notes on hard vocabulary. I seriously have a hard time talking to these people simply because they think I'm making up words. (keep in mind, I’m not using “hard” words, for example the word “cliché” came up, though not in a discussion focused on music, and wasn’t understood) |

If you really like music you wouldn't ask "What type of music do you like?" would you? What a fucking stupid question. Treat the person that asks with the disdain they deserve, say "What the FUCK are you on about, what type of music? The type you can fucking hear, you bollock!" |

everything scup bucket said has applied to me. if i say i like electronic for example they'll think "oh thats crap" (coz they just think of chart dance crap) but if i say idm they wont know wtf it is. people think that because they listen to some alternative music that they know everything and theyve tried everything and what they listen to is the best. every band/artist i like sounds totally different to stereotype sound of the genre theyre in. so wateva i say people get wrong impression. i think just listing a few bands/artists u like and not saying any genres is best way to get through this question. |

i always seem to end up spewing the words "drum & bass" as part of my otherwise baffling answer, and at that moment i can feel myself slipping silently into a little stereotype in their heads. I never ask but i like to know what music people listen to because more often than not I like something that they do. |
