I'm wondering how many XLT members are going to die when
this epidemic becomes pandemic. Apparently it's on its way
to the UK and millions, possibly hundreds of millions, are
predicted to die during its reign. I hope I'm not one of
them.

its on its way everywhere dude
but its very difficult to predict how bad it will be. all
the numbers you hear are just guesses.

difficult to predict when a pandemic may occur.
there have been no sustained human to human transmissions
yet.
could take weeks months or years for the virus to mutate to
a human-to-human transmissible version.

offline zazen on 2005-10-09 19:33 [#01745410]
Points: 184 Status: Regular

>where are you getting this UK stuff?
the bird virus is apparently spreading from asia accross
russia to eastern europe, hence towards the UK. I think that
is what marlowe meant when he said 'heading for UK'.

id rather have matter just be torn apart... probably be fast
and you wouldnt feel it.

this on the otherhand, will be slow and nasty, and some will
live, and some will die... itll be painful.

offline zazen on 2005-10-09 19:43 [#01745421]

in summary:

bird flu: a lot of people are taking this seriously and are
on the case. personally there is not much that you can do
(unless you happen to work for the WHO or Roche). keep an
eye on the news, but dont panic too much because it could
still be a long way off, and it could be less worse than
predicted.

Flu epidemics have a nasty habit of wiping out millions -
the 1918 epidemic wiped out 20 - 40 milliong people - that's
up to 40,000,000 people!

offline dog_belch from Netherlands, The on 2005-10-09 19:52 [#01745430]
Points: 15098 Status: Addict | Show recordbag

So 40,000,000 is like... 40 million? 40 x a million. Let me
put that in perspective.... take one person, and then
imagine that person 39,999,999 times more, all slightly
different.

And all dead from Bird Flu.

*cough* *hack* *cough* *....*

that was in 1918 though!

you have to think of the difference we have now.

40 million out of a world population of 2000 million. Thats
bad, but lots of people survived.

Viruses do not usually evolve to be too deadly, because it
is bad (in evolutionary terms) to kill too many of your
hosts if you are a virus. There are theories that the
1918/1920 epidemic was particularly bad because it evolved
in the trenches, where many humans were packed tightly
together.

Similarly, the current H5N1 bird flu evolved in hong kong
and similar places, where thousands of chickens are tightly
packed in together. It only makes sense for a virus to kill
its host quickly if it can easily get to the next host, and
there are loads nearby.

When H5N1 eventually evolves to pass between humans, it may
also evolve to become less deadly, because otherwise it will
'burn out' too quick.

It will still be a pretty serious event, because we have no
natural immunity to the H5N1 strain, so lots of people will
catch it. But it may not be as deadly to the people that
catch it as it currently is.

However, we cant second guess how its going to evolve
really. Our understanding of these things is a lot less
certain that it appears in the media reports.

Keep an eye on the news, dont panic, get on with life.

Yes -- we have faster channels of communication these days
-- both virtual and physical.

> Yes -- we have faster channels of communication these

That counts both for and against us.
The people movements make it harder, but the information
movements make it easier, to fight a pandemic.

truly be Pandemic.

This would have never happened if people didn't eat so much
damn chicken. Whoever reading this, who just happens to be
eating chicken salad or form-fitted "chicken" nuggets, the
eventual eradication of the human race is entirely your
fault!!!!!!1@:^)?
Keep in the mind, the only remedy for Bird Flu is some good
ol' fashioned chicken noodle soup, given the chicken was not
in the latter stages of bird flu when killed.

They're comparing it's predicted effects on the infamous
Spanish Influenza (that also came from chickens) that killed
more people than WW1 and 2 combined. As it happens the flu
also hit during the 1st orld War.

i've been coughing for weeks now... but i always get
slightly sick with cough and stuff at this time of the
year.

honestly, i can't say i'm worried about this bird flu
thing... i'll just wait and see. lots of catastrophies had
been announced and never happened in the last few years. of
course this doesn't mean this time it won't, but... *shrugs*
