Whilst I do appreciate eveyone's suggestions, and I really do, it's not like I haven't listened to anything other than IDM, I just want to clear that up, if indeed it needed clearing. r40f directed me to the very good SOnic Youth mixtape that's on their site, if that sounds good to anyone, did to me.

No sorry, I didn't mean to put you off, the thing is I've forgotten more bands and records than .. than I can remember so it's great to be reminded of albums and that, because... my memory is like a sieve. There's also things that I probably thought in 1989 "Oh right, I'll listen to that" and then... 1000 years later, I still haven't got round to it.

After a cursory rifle through the collection, i say these are all worth a good listen:
Electrelane - The Power Out Early Pulp stuff, Freaks being particularly good Espers - Espers Pretty much anything by Low, Secret Name is a favourite Scatter - Surprising Sing Stupendous Love Neko Case & Her Boyfriends - Furnace Room Lullaby Arthur Russel - World Of Echo Smog - Knock Knock Town & Country - It All Has To Do With It Ultrasound - Everything Picture (the most fantastically overwrought glam-prog i've ever heard, that makes it sound really shite though)
You may have heard some of those, but they're all Very Good.

Yes oh yes, those Scatter and Arthur Russell albums are some of the Best Albums Ever and it is important to listen to them. Please.
Captain Beefheart is great too. I'd also recommend the album Clear Spot; it's a little more straightforward but still very awesome.
And yes, Gainsbourg is good, especially Histoire de Melody Nelson.

not reading but: the smiths, otomo yoshihide (his jazz quartet/quintet stuff in particular, also "ground zero"), tool (it's good! ænima in particular), radiohead's ok computer b-sides, leadbelly, king crimson's red and discipline, iggy pop & the stooges, faith no more, peter gabriel (1-3, security, so and passion), led zeppelin's houses of the holy/swan song, every beatles album after and including rubber soul (others are good as well, but the quality really amps up here), afrika bambaataa (looking for the perfect beat), ugly casanova, modest mouse's the lonesome crowded west/moon & antarctica, james brown's the payback, beck (every fucking thing) ++++++++

thomas newman soundtracks, bone thugs 'n harmony, faith no more, the supremes...everything else that i normally would listen to when i get into a nooooooo electronic mood has been mentioned i think. and when i get into a reeeeeeally weird mood i listen to pascal comelade. i particularly like this song "green eyes" he did with pj harvey, it is awesome and super melodramatic. but good.

Well, I'm definitely in "Nooooooo electronic" mood, not because I don't like it, but my ears are FULL, so I will give Pascal Comelade a go as he sounds intriguing.
A lot of suggestions, a lot of quality suggestions that I am in the process of following up on, I think we're seeing a very broad range of artists from the very learned members of Zilty, and for that, I, for one, am thankful. A lot of names I have thought "I really should listen to them sometime", a lot of names I never heard, some bands/artists I might just know one or two tracks of but never listened to an album, some names I'm going to ignore.... now, for me, appears to be the time to listen AFRESH to the world of music, and if I come out the other end of this week some twisted jazz freak I'll blame every fucking one of you in here.

i think i've been getting more in a mood for guitar-based music since like....yesterday ? i began with re-discovering "mouth by mouth" by His Name Is Alive, finding Stone Roses/Ian Brown....then checked some Mogwai......and now i'm almost finishing BADMOTORFINGER by the unforgettable Soundgarden....they still sound hard as fuck, as those....15 years ago ! ooops.
of course, there's always some wild Bauhaus, Tortoise/Isotope217, Trans AM, Łoskot, King Crimson,
how about you ? anyone else ? ok, black metal counts too :P
i wonder if RDJ plays some acoustic guitar at home, from time to time...
