'hypnotic' music

A few days ago I had this stupid-ass hypnotist visit my
campus and hypnotised some students. It seemed to me that
a few were obviously just going along with it. But some
must have actually been under his influence or whatever.
Anyway, he was hocking a bunch of hypnotic cds, or whatever
you want to call them. They'd supposedly do things like
help you stop smoking, lose weight or lessen stress. I
think the cds had music on them, but for them to do anything
I'm sure they rely completely on the man's voice and what he
was saying. He also played some really loud soothing-ish
music when he was hypnotising the people.
My question is, do you think that music itself could
hypnotise or give some sort of subconscious suggestion to
the listener? Or if speech is required for any drastic
effect, is it possible for hypnotic suggestions to be
planted in songs while being disguised as regular singing or
'spoken word' parts? I would think that song lyrics always
have had some effect on people if they were to listen to
them incessantly.. but is a hypnotic or suggestive effect
mainly created by the whole "just focus on my voice / you
are getting tired" sort of thing? give me some thoughts
please.

http://www.frederickwinters.com/>this is the guy that I was talking about. a
slightly-annoying 'comedy' hypnotist.

I think most everyone's missing my point here. I'm not
asking for suggestions of music that is 'hypnotic' in that
it is good and you get lost in it while listening, I am
asking if you think it's possible for music to actually
hypnotise in the way a hypnotist does. ..like plant ideas in
your head through the lyrics.. .......Fuck.
I shouldn't have made my first post so goddamned long.

Just relax, and enjoy this pleasant adventure. Here you are,
secure and protected, in this, your special place, letting
my voice flow into your mind. There's no need to
concentrate. Just gently as you go. Suggestions are going
into your unconscious mind. Open yourself up to the greater
wisdom and understanding. So, now, letting the sound of my
voice reach the inner, healthy, receptive centre of
yourself. See yourself now in your imagination; and you are
being tranformed in a positive healthy way, so you are
programming your unconscious mind, gaining new insight into
your directions, in the future. Allow yourself to be more
aware of your pathway through this life. [Enjoy all that
you can.(?)] As the days go by, you are programming your
mind, and you are allowing this to happen. These things are
happening day by day, just as I tell you they are
happening, wherever you are. See this happening. Allow it
to become part of you; more and more happily, more and more
surely, more and more powerfully, each day. When it is
necessary, you can program yourself, be able to dream the
information you require. This awareness will come back to
you at your own rate. It will never be more than you can
cope with. This guidance will help show you the way. This
will only happen if you choose it will be so. Ready, now

Well lastnight, instead of going out socialising, I stayed
in. I watched the Mark Steel Lecture on BBC4 about Sigmund
Freud, and from what little I have learned from that, I
would think that those hypno-tapes work best when someone is
asleep, probably during dreamtime/ REM. That way they can
infiltrate the subconcious, which is they key to unlocking
the mind and really messing with it, kinda like an
administrator mode on a computer.

I'm afraid psycho analysis is not my forte, but I guess you
weren't expecting a decent answer on a music board ;)

no, i don't think it would work. you'd be either listening
to the music, or focussing on a voice. in order to be
effectively hypnotised, you have to give in to the
suggestions, like steve mcqueen said. and there's not much
suggestion in music, and if there was, it would be
completely missed (like with the boards of canada track).

My brother and I went to the Church of Scientology two days
ago in Toronto and watched their 45 minute dianetics video.
It went on that people while onconscious hear and remember
everything that is said or heard (scientologists think you
should always be silent around unconcious or dazed/injured
people and during childbirth and surgery). So according to
dianetics, If you got into a bike accident and hurt your arm
and were dazed while blaring a particular song in your
headphones, you could theoretically experience arm pain
whenever you hear that song.

in 'normal' science that's called 'priming'

Priming in psychology refers to activating particular
representations or associations in memory just before
carrying out an action or task. In a neurological view
priming can be seen as the activation of clusters of neurons
(which can be seen as little stores of particular
information). An interconnected cluster is surrounded by
other clusters that are more or less connected with each
other. When a cluster is activated, for example by the input
of sensory neurons, surrounding clusters that are more
interconnected (due to similar information, for example:
both clusters represent a kind of flower) become more
activated and are therefore more likely to come into
consciousness. So when the cluster that represent the
concept of "flower" is activated, particular clusters will
be more activated then others (i.e. kinds of flowers). These
associations are often regarded as unconscious, but can be
conscious as well. For example, after studying a list of 20
words containing the word "garbage", a subject can be asked
to recall the word by priming with a reminder stimulus
"gar_____".
