good new musics i like

these'll be mostly 2004/2005 releases that i've bought
recently (and i honestly think i get even more enjoyment out
of them by having all the packaging, which truly adds to the
music -- you get a better sense of what the musicians are
trying to accomplish with some of them). i'm trying to get
back into new musics after a fairly long hiatus.

sigur ros - takk

this is an album that had to grow on me. the first few times
i listened to it, i absolutely *hated* some songs,
specifically milano and andvari. they just seemed to lack
the pretty melodies of the others, basically. i suppose the
main thing that differentiates this album from the others
(genre exploration/rock of ágætis byrjun, ambience/post
rock of ( )) are the noise explosions and happy-as-a-clam
moments. instead of sounding like an unmovable force like
the others, takk looses the blanketing atmospherics and
instead makes do with very intricate little details and
tones that you might expect from a high profile glitch
artist (though that'll give you the wrong idea). anyway,
it's about as emotional as the other albums, which makes it
impossible to listen to all the time (except at first, which
is what i did). i have a feeling that takk will come in
handy on cold winter nights whether you're alone, with your
lady, or with a group of close friends who appreciate this
type of music.

song highlight: hoppipola

stina nordenstam - the world is saved

another wintry album that had to grow on me (and is still
growing on me in a very pleasant way (jokes will be made)).
i really loved her last pop album (in fact it helped me get
off drugs and alcohol completely with its sheer
life-is-awesomeness, though i wasn't an addict in the
least). stina sounds a lot more confident with her voice in
spots on this album than her others, though that isn't
really saying much. her voice is incredibly child-like,
though not childish. the songs are still poppy, but after
this is stina nordenstam (her last album) it sounds like
something else com

I'll check out that Nordenstam album, that sounds cool. Takk
hasn't had time to grow on me, I've only listened to it
twice and it went into one ear and out the other. But so did
() and I love that album.

. . . completely. the lyrics are very honest and the
instrumentation can sometimes come across as dark, recalling
her dynamite album. this is basically a manifesto for stina,
an open agoraphobic (har) who tries to say as much as she
can from the safety of her apartment (listening to the
people are strange album to get a sense of what it's like to
live as stina nordenstam). the melodies are simple yet
subtle, and once they bloom, they reveal how pulchritudinous
stina truly is as a person.

song highlight: butterfly

i'll do more when i have time.

it's like twee-jazz-pop. the vocals *will* throw you off at
first.

will be probably growers.

the new pornographers - twin cinema

this is a straight up canadian indie pop release that you'll
listen to furiously for one week before shelving it, but
that one week will be awesome. the new pornographers
are comprised of a.c. newman, neko case, dan bejar from
destroyer, and a drummer you'll take notice of. the songs
are all hyper rock-pop numbers, even the supposedly slow
ones. neko case and dan bejar offer the most unique and
addicting vocals, making their songs the general highlights
(at least for me, since this is all really just a matter of
personal taste). terrific instrumentation, great drumming on
some bits, and overall deliciously poppy songwriting and
vocals make every single one of the songs catchy as all
heck, a solid album that'll take you back to listening to
songs on the radio as a kid but without any of the guilt
attached. also the lyrics don't make any sense and were
apparently chosen for how they sound, if you're into that
type of thing. there is just the right amount of
experimentation to prevent twin cinema from becoming radio
fodder: it's a perfect summer album that'll leave everyone
who hears it with a grin on their face, but it's not the
type of album you create topical shrines for and obsess
over.

song highlight: the bleeding heart show

I think I'm ready to try listening to Sigur Rós again. I
couldn't really get Ágætis Byrjun, which is funny, 'cos
everyone else seems to love those guys.

I usually have a hard time with new bands that sound very
similar to older bands. Like, I prefer Pink Floyd way more
than Sigur Rós, but--contrarily--after careful
deliberation, I find that I prefer Belle & Sebastian more
than The Smiths (but only by a bit, I really love The
Smiths), and I definitely prefer The Shins more than The
Beach Boys.

Not to step on any toes. =D

yeah, it's probably just laziness on my part. not only
should it say album highlight, but i don't say why the song
is a highlight, and it's just personal taste anyway.

sigur ros - takk - hoppipola is the highlight
for me since it's very concise in form, offering an
accessible structure with pretty strings and adorable
squeaks from the singer's voice, making your heart soar
along with the melody.

stina nordenstam - the world is saved -
butterfly is the album highlight if i had to choose
one song to recommend to people unfamiliar with stina. she
slurs her speech babyishly, rocking playfully and
delightedly in the verses set against bouncy pop-jazz
instrumentation before breaking into confident cries of the
chorus 'but the last time i looked in the mirror/it looked
like it was going to be fun'. the chorus is set amidst
strings (i think, going by memory) and deep operatic male
voice samples that create a very dense and enlivening
atmosphere.

the new pornographers - twin cinema - the bleeding
heart show
is the album highlight for me as it offers
both the most interesting structure and elating melodies,
that become more and more catchy as they go along. it begins
with a.c. newman's voice against very spare instrumentation
before breaking into the full band with neko singing, then a
soothing wordless chorus before coming to the climax, with
that soothing chorus altered to suit neko as she sings
loudly and happily while the drums make you get up and
dance. one of my favourite songs this year.

the fiery furnaces - blueberry boat

wow! i borrowed blueberry boat from soulseek when it first
came out but couldn't make it past the first three minutes.
it just sounded like the cheesiest, most insincere thing
ever. then about a month ago i got an itch at the back of my
mind -- i wondered what the heck the rest of the album must
sound like. so i borrowed it again and let the whole thing
run in the background while i talked to one of my best
friends. someone else in the room said he dug how happy the
album sounded. i thought it sounded strange beyond belief,
and imagined i'd never listen to it again, so i deleted it.
now a month later, a year later, i had a very odd craving
for blueberry boat so i decided to pick it up. i played it
on my dad's nice stereo with surround sound. i found myself
wondering why on earth i bought the album. i felt like i had
just wasted about 20$. then chief inspector blancheflower
came on and by the end of the song's nine minutes of playful
beauty and childlike sincerity the entire album suddenly
clicked for me. some of the later songs deeply affected me
and i was completely enthralled; i immediately listened to
the album again once it had finished. now i'm so much in
love that i can easily say that this is my second favourite
album. everything just connects perfectly when i listen to
it, even the velvet underground-styled noise tangents. the
lyrics make me smile and the music makes my mind melt (in a
good way). the fiery furnaces rock the synth like no other
band - - they show no restraint in making every possible use
of it, that most would only use for a laugh in the privacy
of their own rooms. this is the type of music i've plotted
in my head while walking along busy streets and trying to
keep myself company. it's just a terrific, playful, sweet,
delicate, touching album that makes me realise that music
still has a lot more potential than what we've been trudging
through for the past twenty years or so. it's not going to
make sense on the first listen, but when it

most of the albums here didn't hold up too well at all. the
only ones i still listen to often are twin cinema and
blueberry boat. in case we die is still fun, though.

of montreal - that new one that's really popular right
now

well, this really shocked me. i was expecting a light and
fluffy album and was apprehensive about picking it up
because of it, but ended up with a fairly dark and
introspective . . . fun as heck indie disco funk
bowie-biting, fiery furnaces-sniffing little number! i kinda
had it going on as background music the first time i put it
on, not really paying attention to it, then the *screams* in
the past is a grotesque animal grabbed my ears and spat in
them! when did kevin barnes become emo? i don't know, but i
like it. after that moment, the rest of the album took my
full attention. it sure is a lot different from his older
material, a definite gritty escape from satanic panic in the
attic. the synths are so deliciously cheesy, it's as though
they were lifted from well-aged bowie curds. some bits of
synth wankery sneak in with a definite fiery furnaces vibe,
and some are so lo fi that you can hear the looping points,
and honestly i don't like that all too much . . . and some
of the vocals on this album, particularly two songs near the
end, are downright annoying. but beyond those instances of
utter failure this is easily my first favourite album of the
year. just when i think i'm getting sick of it, i give it
another spin and fall in love all over again. catchy is not
a crime.

b+
