once i woke up at three o clock in the night and had the
strong feeling that i didnt have an identity anymore. the
feeling lingers on to this day, weaker though. i guess one
doesnt need identity. identity is something for fascist
groups.

It's pretty much determined by your life experiences, isn't
it?

Other than that, I sent off a couple of forms and money to
the government and they gave me a legal 'identity' in the
form of passport, driver licence, etc.

The opposite is the case, people without a strong identity
often join fascist groups. Or religious communities, where
they are trying to find JESUS, so they can 'synthesize'
their own 'ego' with that of Jesus's 'super ego' ....

You don't really believe that, do you?

Everyone has an identity. Partly it is styled by their ego,
partly styled by their subconsious. Usually if you try to
take a persons identity away - or even if you challenge it -
they will kick and scream. I don't think you can really
grade identities by strength, because identity isn't
something you can quantize and formulate. Its the subjective
understanding and experience of what we are, and it is just
as necessary for everybody to have.

PS. Where did you read that crap about the fascist groups?
Generally people join those strong reactionary groups
because they are conditioned to believe in that, or they
attract to that as a reaction to opposing conditioning.

PPS. Human beings are all conditioned. Its bullshit to
believe otherwise, unless you wake up on a deserted island
after being born, only having to fend for yourself as a
troup of monkeys feed you like you are one of theirs.

actually, monoid has a point about weak people join the
strong. I know sombody who only likes heavy metal music
because everyone else, I asked him to describe what the
music meant to him and he retorted "it's cool".

No such thing as weak or strong. Maybe some peoples identity
requires a group more than others.

true, the concept of weak and strong is limited to a very
narrow level of thinking. My point was though that this
person's musical identity didn't exist, if it doesn't exist
there can't be a need to belong to a certain group.

See, thats the thing. Everybody has an identity. I think its
bad form to put labels on human identity to disect it for
reference, because it creates gaps that can allow people to
loose context of what it might be in reference to, or be
based out of. Generally, people who look for extrinsic
reinforcement in the kind of music that they listen to, see
society as being a bigger part of their life or identity,
than people who look towards intrinsic reinforcement in the
kind of music they listen to. Extrinsic being external
reinforcement, and intrinsic being internal reinforcement.
Neither is better or worse, although, as human beings are
social creatures that prosper in groups, its generally
healthier - mentally - for humans to look for extrinsic
reinforcement.

Yes but Extrinsic reinforcement comes to nothing if you have
nothing to reinforce, it is essential to form a true
identity before looking for social support. You can't be
part of somthing if you're nothing yourself.

Analogy: The wall is made of bricks but there is a brick
missing.

As I said earlier, I don't believe people can lack identity.
The act of having a weak or a strong identity serves nothing
more than selling self help books. Everybody has an
identity, even if they have been sold on the idea that they
need to find it. Its like they have been told over and over
again that its ok if they don't find it, but on the other
hand, they are being yelled at to make decisions which rely
upon their identity. Its a dangerous trapfall, because the
only way to get out of it is by ego killing what you have
been conditioned to believe, and that is an extremely
dangerous road to go down if you don't have a good guide.
The current social paradigm will not allow most people to
see this.

Of course you have a self image that you believe in, or that
you are secretly forced to believe in. That comes FROM THE
OUTSIDE, every self describition of your person, your
identity comes from the outside. Without other people, you
would go into self destruct mode

Once again, your wrong there. Identity is a subjective
experience. Unfortunately, its so deeply ingrained in all of
us, that it becomes transparent. Kind of like if you were to
grow up in a town that smelt like pulp all day.

I think you are talking about personality, not identity.

once again you are wrong WRONG WRONG WRONG. BECAUSE THESE

Maybe you should spend a little more time thinking about
what you are trying to say, and a little less time
mindlessly repeating everything that you read in books.

No, maybe you should spend more time reading books. I can
back up everything I say. Do you want me to post a few links
about the subject? I think its not worth my time, because I
know that ive already won

offline Taxidermist from Black Grass on 2005-09-22 06:12 [#01730104]

Anyways, I have defined identity a couple times as I see it.
I am not going to go into a definition of personality
because I am tired, and I don't want to have to waist my
time with someone who isn't capable of critical thought.
That would be stupid. I have already spent way too long as
it is anyway.

And once again, there is the kind of paradigm that reaks of
poor quality thought. You seem to think that there is a
winning or a loosing.
