I need to get some not too expensive active near-field monitors. I have a few in mind (Fostex PM 0.5 , Tannoy Reveal or M-Audio Studiophile BX8) but it's hard to find unbiased reviews on the web. Any advice would be welcome.

I was going to get tannoy reveals but aren't they supposed to be really lacking in bass?

What is the main difference in active vs. passive. I know one has it's own amps for each speaker or somethiing? Does that really make it better?

With passive speakers, you must provide an external power amplification source.

The thing is, monitors aren't supposed to have great bass or anything. They are supposed to give you a clear idea of what your mix sounds like, without flavoring anything, or emphasizing anything.

something like that yes.
active are just plug and play, passive need an amp in order to hear something.

taxi dermist is right - the tannoys have enough bass. they dont have a total sub bass thing though, so if youre making 'grime' you might wanna get others, but even for drum n bass they are fine.
get the 'actives' if you can, as they have their own dedicated amp built in, instead of you having to get and amp for them.
i have passives and regret that i have to use a Hi-fi amp to power them as its not ideal for pro audio use you know
