I need to get some not too expensive active near-field monitors. I have a few in mind (Fostex PM 0.5 , Tannoy Reveal or M-Audio Studiophile BX8) but it's hard to find unbiased reviews on the web. Any advice would be welcome. |

What is the main difference in active vs. passive. I know one has it's own amps for each speaker or somethiing? Does that really make it better? |

The thing is, monitors aren't supposed to have great bass or anything. They are supposed to give you a clear idea of what your mix sounds like, without flavoring anything, or emphasizing anything. |

something like that yes. active are just plug and play, passive need an amp in order to hear something. |

taxi dermist is right - the tannoys have enough bass. they dont have a total sub bass thing though, so if youre making 'grime' you might wanna get others, but even for drum n bass they are fine. get the 'actives' if you can, as they have their own dedicated amp built in, instead of you having to get and amp for them. i have passives and regret that i have to use a Hi-fi amp to power them as its not ideal for pro audio use you know |

i have a pair of behringer truth 2030a's. they're nice, and don't cost a fortune. |
