i have a 20 gb 4th Gen. It's nice and all that, but the
battery time sucks. who the hell listens to 15 hours of
music straight without changing song?? 8-10 hours is about
right.

yea i had a 60gb creative zen and it broke (the bloody
headphones socket problem), fixed it repeatedly until i
fucked up the motherboard by putting too much solder on.

these things, like mobile phones, seem to be a perfect
example of throw-away culture.. they're manufactured to be
disposable items, even though they're so fucking expensive.
it's a cunt.

I really dislike the £35 headphones that come with it,
they're really bad and break too easily. For someone who
listens to music at the loudest volume they break too often
and the volume on ipods is too low anyway.

I don't like the wheel on the front either, it's not easy to
use. Whatever was wrong with just buttons? :S

the battery in my ipod died in less than a year and it never
came close to those 15 hours. it was more like 5 hours tops
(and that with me not skipping tracks that often).

i've been thinking about getting a new battery. it's kinda
hard getting by with out a portable player if you've had one
for long.

i had a zen micro and the same thing happend to it..after
some time i sent it back and got a new one, it broke
aswell.sent that one back and got myself a 5gig
Iriver...i was chuffed with it, worked like a dream.now all
it does is tell me that the os system it runs on is buggerd
and i am advised to plug it into my pc and run the necessary
tools...and to my luck the application wont recognise
it.hurrah!

is there no way to fix a headphones socket problem?

I have a similar thing wrong with my discman, if I turn the
headphone plus around at all whilst its plugged in the sound
changes and I hear different layers of sound...its really
weird and I've kept it because it's interesting when
listening to some music and finding backing beats that you
could never hear clearly before. Also it works great as a
karaoke player however the problem if that as soon as I move
around with it the layers change so much its impossible to
listen to it. Keep it still on an office desk and its ok
though.

I might by a Zen micro

Yes, there is. Do a google search for "Zen headphone
problem" or "Creative Zen solder headphone" or something.

I asked on a creative mp3 player forum and they sent me to a
page with full hi-res pictures taking you through the
process. I ended up fucking up my mp3 player the third time
i fixed it though.

However, the new zens don't suffer from this problem, so
it's unneccessary.

ah alright, I actually have a broken discman but I'm gussing
it's probably the same problem. Thanks!

Sorry man -

I thought you were connecting your "is there any way to fix
the headphones problem" to your considering buying a zen
micro.

It is exactly the same problem. you may as well see if you
can get your discman open (since it's already fucked) and
try re-soldering the connections for the socket...

hmm it's a good idea but for the effort and trouble I'd have
to go to to open it all, solder it and fix it again it's
probably cheaper to just buy a new one - you can find
discmans/men ? for budget prices now.

I'm just in two minds as to whether I will get a replacement
or upgrade to an mp3 player... it seems like such a waste of
all the CDs I've bought and I admit I still like the way you
buy a new disc and keep it in your portable CD player for
weeks until you rinse it out. I hate to think that by having
all my music disposably at my fingertips it might end up
devaluating it all :/

I used my gf's ipd at the weekend.

I've used them briefly before and never been impressed- In
short, for me, they sum up exactly what I dislike about
macs: The users are zealots who are prepared to overlook
significant failings and pay over the odds, just because it
looks pretty and has a bohemian/alternative attitude pushed
by the (admittedly very clever) marketing bods.

However, I didn't hate them until now... I found much
to my dismay you couldn't copy tracks from the ipod to a PC
using itunes and instead have to use some third party s/w to
do it. How bent is that? Ok, if you're billy no mates it's
not a problem, but most people share tracks with friends.
Yes, I know that's technically piracy, but apple ought to
get of their high horse- the ipod's popularity is built on
the back of piracy (you reckon most people with full 40gb
ones legally own every track?)

thats an excessively boring link. people who hate apple are
vastly more annoying than people who love apple

I still use my Shockwave tape player. The bass boast kind of
drains the batteries but what the hey?

I was thinking of burning some mix cds today though. I`m
kind of in 1992 right now sorry.
