Weird connection problem.

Hi gang, i have a Problem. It's an intermittent thing, but
for some reason my incoming network traffic starts running
at maximum speed (despite me downloading nowt) every so
often, making it so slow i can't even load bloody google. I
smell something virusish about the whole affair but the
latest update of AVG isn't picking anything up. I don't
think it's a broadband thing, it used to happen on dialup
too, although less frequently.

Even stopping all traffic in kerio firewall doesn't make a
difference. And you cannae see which process is using all
the bandwidth, there's nothing there... apart from when i
unplug the network cable and stick it back in, a process
comes up under svchost.exe called "bootpc", running at hella
speed, and then promptly disappears.

I'm rather stumped here, would appreciate any assistance.
Ta.

(btw, apologies if i can't reply straight away, when my
connection goes screwy i can only load about 1 page in 20)

spybot looks for adware, blah blah... stored in your pc

hijackthis checks running processes... save a log file, and
paste it here..

then remove whatever seems to be wrong

I've used both for a while now my man, removed
navwindows.exe with HijackThis as i've seen it come up as
trojan-related at some point. I'm still waiting to see if it
has any effect, like i say the problem is intermittent so
it's a bit of a cunt to diagnose. Ta though, i know that's
the standard response innit :)

Razorblade: Nope, no special filters or anything (mainly
because i'm not entirely sure how to use them)

if it's windows you're using...

the best problem solver = backup+format+re-install

xD

If i haven't managed to sort this out in a day or two i
shall be doing just that. Probably needs it by this point
anyway, haven't done the reformat/reinstall thing in more
than a year.

It seems alright for the minute, i'll try to bump this if
things go tits up again. Sorry to pester people but i hate
fumbling in the dark.

write down the entire list of memory resident programs and
systematically go through them, using google if necessary to
check exactly what they all do. something may have (and this
is quite common) attached itself to your startup list. this
willl not be detected with avg spybot or ad-aware. get some
utility if necessary so you can see the whole startup list.
i use regcleaner (it has this built in as one of its
functions).

It's the first thing i do when any shite like this crops up
mate, i can't see anything out of the ordinary in the memory
resident stuff, unless one of the normal background
processes has been overwritten. Thing is, i've tried ending
process on even the system processes that i thought might
have been replaced, didn't make a blind bit of bastard
difference. The only thing that looks even slightly dodgy in
regcleaner was c:\windows\updreg.exe, but apparently that's
something to do with creative labs soundcards, to remind you
to register or some such fuckery. Bit of a headscratcher.
