Scoring a film soundtrack

I need a bit of advice....

I'm hoping to "score" a friend's film's soundtrack. What I
need to know is what software I need to get hold of to do
this......

I'd like something that would enable me to watch the film
and put in samples, musical passages and phrases, etc. It
would be good if I could use VST instruments in the program
too, I suppose.

However, this has all got to be able to run on my computer,
which isn't massively powerful (a 4-year old 1GHZ, 256MB IBM
laptop).

Does anyone have any suggestions?

just put the video on your tv while you record on your
computer, then give your friend the score and let him add it
to the film with his own devices.

Cubase is fine for this - you can run an avi or mov in a
window or second display in sync to your score. I'd turn off
the thumbnail previews though as that can suck resources
dry, esp when timeline zooming etc. I've used Cubase to
score animations and short DVDs without probs. I needed to
convert a DVD .vob to avi though to import it (Nuendo
apparently supports vob importing natively.)

whne you finish the tracks run it threw a tape recorder then
back onto the final result, so you end up with a atmospheric
sound

Thanks - I've got Cubase, haven't used it in ages. I'll give
that a shot :)

digital performer. Use a mac, it'll handle everything
better.

i did short pieces for a film soundtrack before, for a
24-hour film race, and i also did stuff for a production of
Medea. sometimes you can do it freely, just vent on the
concept then write something, or watch the work silently and
let the sounds manifest in your head.
