A Strange Fact About Music

This afternoon I had a friend in my room and I played some
stuff on my wonderful brand new mkII. He didn't really like
the music and I began to feel uncomfortable ; I even told me
that the music was not very good and began to think that I
couldn't explain why this music was nice.
Then when I came back home tonight, I played the same
vinyles than in the afternoon and this time I enjoyed them
very much and thought that everything was great !

Does it happend to you sometimes to think that your music
isn't that great when you are not listening to it alone ?

I wasn't DJing, I was just playin stuff on 1 turntable ! It
could have been exactly the same with CDs or mp3s.

It's because it's human nature to be influenced by people
who mean something to you for whatever reason. If they don't
like something, and say so, you are more inclined to see
things from their perspective and start to feel swayed by
their viewpoints. There's also the probability that you get
a little saddened that they don't like something you do.

Bull!

I am living proof of the exact opposite. I listen to sludge
and drink and burn bridges.

well not always but it is starting to seem that way

Well I did say "more inclined" and "swayed". Didn't say it
happens for everyone, or that it happens to the same degree
for everyone. I wasn't going to go into the reasons why some
people might feel it more than others cos that'd take
hundreds of influencing factors into account, since birth.

influence?

Isn't that a bit harsh, just because he does not share
Combo's music taste? If you have a guest, it is polite, if
you are to play music in their company, not to play music
which makes your guest uncomfortable. It isn't the friend's
fault that Combo lost confidence in his music selection.

well, i've found that songs i write that i am not partial
to, are the ones that are usually enjoyed by other people.
sometimes you have to stand back from a song a while,
especially one you write, then come back to it so you can
see it more objectively. this has happened to me with a lot
of music i ignored as i was younger than i rediscovered i
have gotten older.

...that's why i almost only listen to music on headphones.

and whenever i hear someone (usually my parents) knocking at
my room's door, i put the music on pause if i'm listening to
it on speakers.

Yes, sometimes I do the same thing when my parents knock at
my room's door, but noit always, it depends : ELECTRONICA,
HIP-HOP, TECHNO = PAUSE but ROCK, POP = OK.

this happens to me with some people. in my opinion, or
rather in my experience, it has nothing to do with being
influenced by the person with whom i'm listening. with some
people, i don't care if they don't like the music, and i may
not even sense that they don't like it until they say so;
with others, i can feel their displeasure and i experience
displeasure leaking into my pleasure. whether or not i
value/respect their opinion doesn't seem to influence my
experience.

I know the music I listen to is great and I expect icky
reactions to it from other people, so naw. But sometimes
when I listen to stuff I don't like much, later someone with
good taste whose opinion I respect will tell me they like it
and explain why, and I'll be all like ''wtfomg, I am missing
something''. And then I often find it. People can make me
like things that didn't initially strike me as anything
special, but nobody's lukewarm reaction to my favorite music
has any affect.

I hate listening to music socially anyway, and I hate it
when someone comes into my room while I'm listening to
music. I always turn it completely off and don't want to say
anything abou tit. And I don't like my music wafting out the
window and being heard by neighbours. I also turn my car
music down if I drive by a busy area. I can't really explain
why I like to keep my music to myself... I mean, I make
mixes for people and love recommending my favorite stuff but
I want people to listen to it away from me.

Its the energy that gets expressed through the listeners. If
they are listening to music they enjoy, there will be a much
brighter energy released into the room. If they do not enjoy
it, the energy will not be as bright. So if you are
listening to music that other people aren't enjoying, their
response will create a kind of energy that will make you
less confortable. You will understand this as being the
music you are not enjoying, even though its not the music,
but the energy that is apparent because of the music. This
works in any kind of social situation. This is also how a dj
can influence the energy of a room by playing music that
people will enjoy.

Its ALL energy.

You know what I am talking about.

Have you ever been at a club sober, in the dance area, and
found yourself enjoying music that you normally won't? Its
the same thing. Just keep in mind that your energy is going
to influence the environment as much as the environment is
going to influence you.

I have no prroblem with the fact that my frriends don't like
the music I play. My mate Jack is interrested in it
though, which is cool. With otherr frriends it's actually
prretty satisfying to see the look of horrrrorr on theirr
faces
