Ohm boyz predatohm and frohmage are good at distortion.
MDA Bitdegrade.
Madshifta.
NI Guitar rig.
Delaydots DaBomb.
iZotope Trash (very CPU heavy!)

There are a lot more crappy ones. I like the DaBomb because
it is very simple to use, and you get a good ammount of
control over the sound, expecially for only having two
sliders and two switches. And it can decimate your sound
without taking up too much channel space.

awww shucks...

Heh. Out of that entire list, my favorites, like I said, are
the dabomb, but I also like the MDA degrade one. I really
like the idea of uncolored distortion, where I use filters
and other effects to add the character, and the distortion
to decimate it. I like modular environments with plenty of
small dedicated tools, instead of programs that do all.

Although, like I said, for the do all programs that do more
than just distort, the trash plugin is awesome, as well, as
Guitar rig, which is the be all and end all of pretty much
any effect. Don't let the conservative UI fool you, its just
as flexible as anything else NI have ever made.

And for glitchier distortion, the madshifta has always
proven a reliable tool, usually through automating the delay
length and ammount, while making sure the resonance is just
high enough to make the audio clip. Amazing feedback out of
that thing if you learn to ballance the delay with the
resonance(most likely because the filter is actually kind of
shitty, but the delay and pitch shift is so well done). You
can get a similar, but cleaner sounding effect with the
frohmage. But it doesn't have the glitchy delay sound.

I like guitar rig, it has some awesome dists. Greats for
high-resonance reeses with cutoff-modulation.

Also the ability to combine different microphones with
different compressors and cabinets at varying distances,
then adding reverbs and choruses. Its a great way to achieve
extremely natural sounding distortion and controled
clipping. As well as adding a natural space and context to
computer generated sounds, making the sounds more natural.
When I get around to mastering everything I have been doing
lately, I am probly going to be using guitar rig to create
room ambience, as well as waves ir reverb with some special
rooms I have designed in an impulse modeller.
