1.Were there ever any reasons to be a marxist?
2. Who cares what the diffrence between
Marxism/Stalinism/Leninism is? It all degenerates into state
sponsored capitalism sooner or later.

Sits back and awaits flaming.

According to some marxists, the communist ideas brought by
the Russian Revolution weren't communist at all. At least
the end result wasn't communism. The difference between
Marxism and Leninism is that Marx believed the developments
that lead to communism take a long period of time, while
Lenin saw no need and just took direct action to speed these
things up. That's the idealogical difference. Marxists would
say there is a big difference in what Marx had in mind and
what resulted in communist Russia, that communist Russia was
just a front for a dictatorship. Stalin didn't have much
ideology as far as I know.

even a perfect communist society would be morally bankrupt
if you have any respect for the "individual" as a concept

Bang on the money.

Even if it worked (which it wouldn't), would you want to
exist without a sense of self?

For all it's flaws, capitalism is the better system.
Capitalist societies are the most tolerant, have the most
technological progress and the best
art/music/literature/etc.

Economic Left/Right: 0.63
Social Libertarian/Authoritarian: 2.21

The results of the test are fairly accurate: I'm reasonably
moderate with slight authoritarian/conservative leaning and
the stats show that. The reason a lot of people here
perceive me as very conservative is simply the general bias
towards the left and liberality here (although it seems to
of lessened the past couple of years, I still they're the
most prevalent leanings on the board) making me seem
comparatively right wing. It's all relative, innit?

I dunno, living standards in capitalist countries are
generally higher than in communist countries. I suppose the
"we eat for you" tier (The middle classes) is bigger.

Because a capitalistic society is fairly upfront about the
way that it is similar to that poster, whereas in the
example swears gives (the same situation in a communist), it
smacks of hypocrisy because they claim that they're
completely different and such a tiered system doesn't exist.

i'm kind of surprised that no one is willing to advocate for
the left. i wouldn't call myself a communist, but it isn't
at all obvious to me that it's a worse system than
capitalism. particularly since everyone wants to latch on to
the in practice tangent... well okay, yes there was mad
genocide in the Soviet Union, but tell the people in third
world countries how great it is to be an unwilling
participant in what is more or less a global capitalist
system. i agree that Marx doesn't leave enough space for the
individual, and i find his stringent aspirituality rather
repugnant (and quite possibly the central flaw of his
works), but, again, hyper-individualism in practice has lead
to a lot of pretty shitty things.
i don't really want to advocate either way, i just don't
think it's quite so open and shut.

maybe we could get the opinions from some people who aren't
sitting in front of a personal computer. i know it sounds a
bit provocative and all, but it's true.

PS- i do not plan on sticking around to see this argument
through, i'm not sure how i let this post balloon so much.

one last thing:

it would be interesting to see how a communistic society
would pan out if it wasn't constantly at loggerheads (one
way or another) with Capitalism's major proponents (ie: the
USA)

offline manicminer from Paris (France) on 2005-09-15 10:03 [#01723830]

But capitalism won't work in the long-term either..... for
one thing, it's environmentally unsustainable. I think we'll
see that for ourselves over the next few decades. Once the
environment's fucked, the system's fucked. And the system
fucks the environment..... so, we're fucked.

How eloquently put.

Capitalism also creates a culture of inequality, and even in
the most "developed" countries, the rich appear to get
richer whilst the poor get poorer. This creates resentment,
hatred and ultimately IMO would destroy society itself. But
I think the environment will do that job first.
