can anyone reccomend me some sad and melancholic music?

ryuichi sakamoto-yamazaki 2002 is a good reference i think.

thanks.

the whole "Love is the devil" soundtrack by the very same
ryuchi sakamoto should be pretty good at making you feel a
bit shit. it's very good and electronic. y.

a lot of tracks on The Books' "the lemon of pink" have a
definitive downbeat slant (especially the second half of the
album).

um.. let me think..

i'm not that fond of the books, altho that vocal "the lemon
of pink" was rather enjoyable.

smtn more down, the books are here and there with emotions.

you'll notice when it's at more or less the same time when
suddenly your connection to Zilty grinds to a halt and it
takes a minute or so before you can reload the page. or at
least that's my experience.

WELL WHAT ABOUT LOVE IS THE DEVIL THEN!?!?

I'm sorry. I'm alright now.

do you want specifically excellent electronic music or any
music really?

Check out Angels of Light - "Everything is Good Here".
Everything this guy, Gira, makes is sad by definition

there's some sadness on "sung tongs" by Animal Collective
("kids on holiday" always makes me feel sad, but in that
"it's going to be alright.. maybe"-way). there's also some
very happy stuff on there, though.

And I guess most of Current 93. Sad as hell, often that
different kind of sad.

The coverr of Jolean by Dolly... my lorrd, it's so sad. I've
said this beforre on the message boarrd, but when I got this
album I was spending most nights awake with the shakes, I
was a mess... and this was the only album I could brring
myself to listen to. Now it just rreminds me of that time
and it gets me upset. Grreat album i can't listen to.

well, i was thinking about instrumental music, it can have
vocals, but that's a whole different sphere.

pink pink pink pink, pink moon? that one? i love that
song, but i'm not much of a nick drake fan sadly.
it's prrobably just because i haven't given the album time
enough even though it's been collecting dust forr yearrs
now.

yeah, i've had that on vinyl for years. it's one of my
favorite albums ever. incredibly dark and sad. as was
mentioned earlier in the thread, Gira was the main creative
force behind the Swans, and all of the swans music is great
imo. not all of it is sad, though. ;)

that's the first song, but I was talking about the whole
album, which is also called "pink moon".

the song "pink moon" is the most upbeat thing on there, I
think. it's downhill from there - but a good although (as
Arf says) intense downhill.

It's hard to find melancholic music, isn't it? You really
have to ask around, be in the know, have a contact that can
put you in touch with "sad" music, terrible. If I didn't
have a worldwide network of people furiously digging out the
broad spectrum of "downbeat" I'd have only ever heard happy
house.

hmm.... i'm not as familiar with much "sad" music. i've been
listening to stuff like pixies and joy division lately.

why not go for something obvious, like the Cure's
Disintegration?

i wasn't calling them sad at all... i was just saying, i
wasn't listening to much sad music lately. (ex. pixies and
joy division) okay, so joy division is sad. i can't speak
english, man, quit busting my balls. :P

if you like any classical, the choral masses of palestrina
often make me cry - they're quite beautiful. "sicut cervus"
and "pope marcellus mass" are both amazing, if you like that
sort of thing.

my crying fit yesterday morning had me listening to eels -
electro-shock blues. some of the songs may be a bit more
upbeat, but the whole album is chock full of saddness. i
mean, he friggin wrote the whole thing in a mental
institution after his sister died and he had a breakdown.

sigur ros and explosions in the sky are also quite
melancholy.

El Greco by Vangelis, intense, but the most melancholic
piece of music ever must be Symphony nr 3 by Henryk Gorecki,
check it and weep...

That sounds awesome, I'll check that out, I love Arvo Part's
choral stuff and Sven-David Sandstrom and the like. That
Silvestrov album I listed has the most affecting choral
lines I've ever heard, they make me so sorrowful I have to
suppress nausea.

Youve got some great recommendations, Plaster...ill just
emphasize one that Combo mentioned: DEATHPROD. Brilliant.
Its not sad in a sense of crying, but it will shift your
perspective in a tremendously heavy way, man! Unbelievably
strong, i say that box of his was the best 2004 release,
especially Treetop drive.
In a way which i cant explain (due to my pathetic english)
its the saddest album ive ever heard.

Blonde Redhead - Blonde Redhead is really sad too, but in a
different way. More explicit way, i may say. Screaming
guitars, beautiful vocal performing by that cute japanese
womangirl Kazu. 'I dont want you' and 'Swing pool' are a
blast.

Hope youll enjoy these.
