Great film, but I'm a huge Johnny Depp fan so I'm a little biased ;)

A friend told me that once he saw a movie box and on it was bill murry and he looked alot like the guy in fear and lothing, so i'm wondering was the johnny depp one a remake of an old fear and lothing?

I thought Blow kind of blatantly ripped off goodfellas.

JOB - no it's not a remake - it is the film version of hunter s thompson's infamous book of the same name, penned in 1968. hunter s thompson is one of my all-time faves - i highly recommend fear and loathing on the campaign trail '72 which covers the presidential election between nixon and mcgovern...currently reading the great shark hunt.
i thought BLOW was a pretty decent movie, which thankfully, due to it's factual content, couldn't really lay on a happy ending. i am a big depp fan too.
i have to disagree with lecoueur about the former pee wee herman - playing a camp hairdresser wouldn't exactly stretch his acting abilities...

taoist blockade, how can you say it blatantly rips off goodfellas? it is based on fact, it doesn't feature the mafia, it doesn't have a deniro character, or a pesci character, based in completely different locales, the tones of the films are entirely different -- they are NOTHING like each other

I *love* fear and loathing :)
That movie (and the book) is just so fucking trippy!
Unfortunately I don't do acid, so I can't experience this whole "watching fear and loathing whilst tripping" experience that my friends tell me about, but it was fun watching it stoned ;)

watching it stoned would probably induce an acidesque trip - and you should go out and buy some black microdot LSD this instance! :D

The structure of blow and goodfellas is exactly the same, if you mapped out the progression of the characters in each film you have very similar character development patterns. Not taking place in the same locale or involving the mafia doesnt mean they dont have strong similarities. They both traverse a great deal of mutual ground, the rise to and subsequent fall from power because of betrayal and succumbing to excess. It would actually be an interesting topic to write an essay about.

like i said, they are both based on a criminal's life - necessarily they will be caught, else they wouldn't have made their life story - that's where the similarity ends.
jAr - you didn't like rum diary? i thought it was excellent, same goes for hell's angels - you should enjoy that - read the sonny barger book afterwards which slags of the good doctor - barger just sounds like a total cretin - thank god he's had his vocal cords removed.
