this is intriguing. i also like hearing cacophony in music...
well, i'd say the ultimate in cacophonic music would have to be any atonal or noise music...

...the most cacophonic stuff i know that comes to my mind include Boredoms ("Pop Tatari" is great), Ruins (but that's too cacophonic to my taste), Captain Beefheart (obviously)... Mr Bungle too... but you already know them all. ' _' (and i only really like Boredoms and Mr Bungle from these.)

If your experience of free jazz is Peter Brotzmann then you're bound to think it's cacophonic. These cd's are more restrained:
Bill Dixon - Vade Mecum Phil Minton & Roger Turner - Dada Da Assif Tsahar, Mat Maneri & Jim Black - Jam

Depends on how you define noise music, really, and even cacaphony. I don't limit it to just ''Merzbow'' dissonance and madness. I consider artists like Asmorod, November Novelet, Dagda Mor to have really utilized noise in their music, that's good enough for me. A different, more structured use of noise but I wouldn't call it ambient AND I don't want to bother labelling it specifically. I'm not a fan of concrete genres... this is noise, this isn't... that's pointless, I hate arguments like that. I just use genres or labels or whatever to point the general direction. If someone was listening to Merzbow and wanted some stuff like it, you wouldn't have to give them something exactly like Merzbow to please them. Not everything I listed up there uses ''dissonance'' (although it's there).

what are you talking about? the word cacophony is not open for interpretation. it has a definition. "noise music" is a loose term and i didn't argue with you about it - i agree, there's all sorts of styles and degrees.

Dissonance, dischordance, whatever, it doesn't really matter what the strict definition of it is. I wasn't arguing what cacophony is, disregard the arbitrary ''definition'' quip, all I meant to get at is that there's a wide variety of music out there that fits this bill, and that I disagree that ''most noise music is cacophonic'' (OMG I've been misspelling it so long). But again it depends on how you define ''noise music'', I guess. I don't think it goes hand in hand with cacophony at all.

well, then i should clarify that when i said noise music, i was referring to the genre noise music (the post-industrial stuff), which includes artists like merzbow, masonna, kk null, etc. i'm well aware that there is music that is noisy or contains elements of noise, but i also wouldn't refer to that music as "noise music".

Cool. I know that's what you're referring to and that's the first thing I think of when I think ''noise music'' actually, but I don't bother recognizing it as an official thing or anything, so when someone says they want noise music, I don't think ''give them Masonna''. Same thing with cacophony, I know there's a dictionary definition, but it means different things to different people. Whether or not it really is cacophony or not. Know what I mean?
''i must think the other cacophony then :)''
