im figuring out this stuff a bit now (im still using the darned 404 of fruity cause i didnt get any better tips)
this is stuff i found: free plugins (im sure it's all spammed before) and books i might buy (because this wiki page made my head explode: information overload. i read on future producers forum once about that computer music book i think (it looked different though) but going into detail about what a computer does)
nice one too

You should try building your own in reaktor, very rewarding.

you want an oscillator synthesizer? You are your own! As you've probably read, every sound we can hear can be broken down into sine waves but natural sounds are very complex and difficult to emulate. However with oscillators all you have to do is isolate a small part of a wav and loop it. Then you can put these into samplers (in flp yes too).
Try to make a square by distorting the sine wave until it clips and has only 1 peak and one trough . Experiment with isolating different shapes in sounds. And these guys talking about programming your own in reaktor/your own computer... it would take about 3 seconds. Honestly.

btw any electrical impulse is considered synthesized once it is sped up to the speed of human hearing. just an interesting synthesis point

ah by the way, have you tried 3xosc???? its kind of weak but will get the job done. Try layering a shape you created yourself (with a "layer" generator) with the 3xosc. you can get some amazing using that process.

the 3xosc has 3 simple oscillators
sine, triangle, square, saw, TB303 saw, noise, custom(?)
custom is also reall ycool because you can load a .wav in there and it will treat it like an oscillator as well

k :) i only get that 3xosc and ts404 of fruity sound not good because it emulates the amp (tube or whatever) bad, i used to think it should sound good cause it's just a frikkin' sinus it has to mimic, but apprantly it doesnt
ive used pro53 of native with some successes but i figured i had to start first real simple with just on oscillator wave, ill just try some plugins and maybe something like reaktor, but the thing is when im making music things have to get done quick quick quick

ok the oscillator is the basic sound generating block in a synth, but to get a sweet sound you need sound altering blocks:
OSCILLATOR-->FILTER-->AMPLITUDE-->
The basic waveforms for oscillators are sine, square, triange, saw, etc.
Each has a different sound. Sine waves are the simplest with no harmonics, the others have more harmonics and a 'richer' sound.
With harmonically rich waveforms the filter can cut off some harmonics to produce interesting sounds.
Layering oscillators will also produce intersting sounds of a more complex nature. As stated above, all sounds can be simplifed down to a series of sinewaves. By running multiple oscillators together you generate a series of sinewaves which vary in phase and produce more complex 'everyday' sounds. By adjusting the filter, and adding resonance, the sound can be radically adjusted.
Using envelopes to control the filter and amplitude can let you do sweeps, quick stabs, all sorts. Using low frequency oscillatos (LFO) to modulate these or the oscillator can produce cyclic varyations, tremolo, panning, sirens, slicing, swooshing, all sorts ofsounds.
So there is more to it that just the oscillator. Set the oscillator to produce a harmonically rich noise, like a square wave or something, leave it alone and adjust the filter then maybe modulate the filter and amplitude by envelopes.
more info-I've linked to the sound on sound synth secrets articles, they should tell you everything, hopefuly in not too much detail. I dunno if what I've said is too basic, or not helpful, but hopefully the link can help you.

righto. thats essentially what I was saying but simplified and in my own words. This gets us closer however (in terms of harmonic complexity) to talking about different TYPES of synthesis like AM and FM. Obviously something like granular synthesis doesn't belong in the thread but if you're interested Big, we can cover lots of ground.
And what I was saying about the Reaktor patch was mildly understated. YES it is very easy to create an oscillator within reaktor or any other modular interface (as they are usually used for clocking functions or modulating another sound/itself) but there are subtleties and complexities within envelope and filtering that aren't so easy to master.
I'd highly recommend playing around with reaktor now that I think of it.

by the way: fruity loops is also very good for experimenting with static envelopes within the sample window however for dynamic things (which are most interesting these days... kraftwerk treaded their soil ages ago) which can be created within flp with much stress via math controllers and automation, it is much preferred to use something like Reaktor which is modular and allows clocking and manipulation of nearly every aspect of a sound. Whew talking about this stuff gets me hot! honest!

what does modular mean? does it have to do with: Designed with standardized units or dimensions, as for easy assembly and repair or flexible arrangement and use: modular furniture; modular homes.

hahah Kazoos are really very cool, I've sampled one and its so cool, just bust out a jam on that kazoo, then loop it, beats messing around with black and white notes on a keyboard.
The owl hoot emulator is slightly cooler tho, cos its modular, so you can repatch the modules to do a wicked clap emulation and also with the optional mod grip turn it into a funky live performance tool.
