Prodigy at V Festival

Were any of you there?

Just watching some 'highlights' of the fest on E4. Glad I
wasn't there. Holding out to see what Dizzee Rascal and
Prodigy were like.

They screened Their Law... Obviously the sound on the
recording didn't do the show justice, too tinny, no bass -
but it just looked a bit embarassing. They seemed to be
taking themselves very seriously (Liam & Maxim in
particular). I always liked the tongue-in-cheek feel to
early Prodigy stuff, but this just looked like a bunch of
married men in their 30s trying to re-live that teenage,
nihilistic Fuck you! Look at me you cunts! I'm going to
swear til I get everyone's attention 'cos I know it upsets
parents and politicians
.
It smacked a little of the stylised faux-rebellion of
Marilyn Manson, Eminem etc.

Shame.

I'm sure it was a lot of fun for the people there though.

God I feel old. But I'm not. Not really, anyway.

That's just it though. It's textbook craziness, which really
isn't that crazy at all. I don't mind theatrics, if you've
got the tunes to back it up. But it really didn't seem like
they did.

To be honest, although he's always been the most
theatrical/ridiculous of all of them, I have the most
respect for Keith. He knows he's just a gurning
frontman/clown, and is under no illusions about his
abilities.

Maxim on the other hand made a terrible solo LP, Leeroy left
to go solo (and we've heard nothing since), and as for
Liam... well... He's a bit like Fatboy Slim. One trick pony
with a vaguely famous wife who schmoozes at 'celebrity' dos.

Their law was a great tune

I remember reading an interview with Keith years back - at
the time that everyone was trying to portray him as public
enemy number one (for having spikey hair, piercings and
eyeliner). He went on and on about how he didn't go out much
any more. Instead he liked to spend his time fixing
motorbikes, gardening and enjoying relaxing baths,
surrounded by scented candles, listening to Pink Floyd.
Whether he was exaggerating or not, he certainly succeeded
in sounding as though he didn't take himself too seriously.

Around the same time I read an interview with Liam Howlett
where he described himself as an innovator.

Prodigy's first couple of albums may have been fun - but
they weren't revolutionary by any means. And this interview
was published to coincide with Fat Of The Land. Not really a
classic in my humble opinion.

Their law was a great, fun, angry tune - but on TV
last night it just looked like a sort of sad pantomime. And
it didn't sound very good either.

Yea, I can imagine. But when I dig up old tapes and stumble
across the tune it's always a slight delight :)

I remember really liking the progression of Break And
Enter
- the way the layers of the track build up.
Haven't heard it for years though.

Just remembered I used to own a copy of No Good For
Me
by Kelly Charles - sampled on No Good (Start The
Dance)
.

I saw prodigy at the V fest this year, the one in Chelmsford
and I thought it was really good. Although I was in a
massive throng of people near the stage and had been in the
sun all day drinking beer, so that may have had an effect.

The sound was not tinny live, definately not, was very deep
and bassy and loud. maxim and liam were acting like gods,
but who cares the music was good, and keith was great, just
attempted to look weird/menacing and didnt do a lot, just
went crowd surfing. It was good ENTERTAINMENT.

I'm off to see them in Cardiff on the "Their Law" tour. A
few bevvies and the right frame of mind and it should be
great fun.

I saw the Prodigy at Chelmsford V festival and thought they
were shit, so shit in fact that I ended up walking away and
watching Scissor Sisters for the last half hour of the
night!

They might as well have put the cd's on, no variation to the
album versions of the tracks, aside from maxim and keith
shouting down microphones then standing around trying to
look menacing whenever a track from always outnumbered album
was played as they had no part in its production.

I was a huge prodigy fan from experience to fat of the land,
now they just seem to be a comical version of their former
selves.

I saw Leeroy DJ'ing in the Strongbow rooms earlier in the
day, playing a nice selection of filthy electro + plenty of
Jilted tracks....he was one of the highlights of the day.

You obviously didn't drink enough of the rip of £3/pint
carling.
did you see the chemical brothers the night before? that was
much better.

I got pretty wrecked that day, hit the cider big time!
Maybe it was a combination of drinking all afternoon and a
lapse of acts playing fast music from 4-9pm that led to me
being knackered and unappreciative. @_@

I will investigate further by downloading their recent set
from the link recycle kindly provided above.

I didn't go on the saturday (which is a shame as the lineup
was much better) My mate also said Chemical Brothers were
good, playing a few classics. I saw them at Sonar earlier
this year where they just played a load of boring techno
with too many trance overtones.

Wow! Sometimes I can be too critical...I had a good time
anyway!

So do you live near Chumpsfad mr Dave G?

The the previous day was 10x better and yes there was a big
gap before the prodigy. The Saturday was better since there
was no gaps in between things, infact it was the opposite,
but you never had a chance to calm down.

The friday night was good too, I spent a good few hours
dancing to some old skool jungle in a dance tent there, with
some very good djing.

The chemical brothers did play classics, and it was better
than I was expecting. great visuals and lasers too, a good
SHOW.

I'm, not from Chumpsfad or Essex, I'm from good old
Hertfordshire, St.Albans infact.
