I just realized I don`t anymore.. at least not 100% of the
time... too often have I seen, smelled, heard and just
generally noticed things that aren`t there. It`s not due to
any substances either, but I know I have migraines, which
often is the cause of these `hallucinations,` so sometimes I
just don`t trust what I sense, and have to ask others if it
really is there (I just did once more, and it turned out
no-one else could smell vanilla). I`m not becoming a skeptic
or anything, nor do I ask if you are, but do you feel your
senses are reliable, and both in the case of `no` or `yes`:
why?

mastah: have you gotten your head checked out? Honestly,
these types of olfactory hallucinations and migraines can be
a warning sign for larger issues...

dont mean to scare ya, just wanted to check.

No I didn't! If you insist, I'm talking about brain
cancer/tumors!

oh, I haven`t had any sympotms that suggest anything but
migraines, and I`ve had migraines my whole life, and
generally know how they feel. I think the first post may
give the impression I see things all the time, but it`s more
whenever I get stressed or have too much sugar, both of
which trigger my migraines... oddly enough, I`ve never had
it triggered by caffeine, as is normal, but.. yeah, I`m sure
it`s nothing more serious than migraines. I also have long
periods with nothing migraine-related happening, but I`ve
had some stress lately, and sometimes I get weird smells or
small blips of things...

in all, it`s enough to make me question the appearances of
certain things. smell is the most common, and it doesn`t
even have to have the rest of the migraine (the classic pain
and vomit) follow it.. with hallucinations, it`s more `the
full thing`

fuck, this isn`t supposed to be about me.. I know it`s only
migraines, and apart from when I get migraines, I`m ok.
thanks for worrying, though, guys. <3!!!

now, do you trust your senses?

like, if i'm inebriated or having a panic attack or
something then it's pretty safe to assume that my senses
aren't as sharp as they could be.

but, i don't think i'm delusional nor do i suffer
from hallucinations (that i know of), so to trust my senses
seems to be pretty logical. they seem to approximate
reality rather well so far... i mean, they seem to be
correct more than they're wrong anyhow.

yeah, you probably don`t have any reasons to distrust them,
which is good. and I can assure you that if you meant to
write

like, if i'm inebriated or having a panic attack or

aren't as sharp as they could be.

res extensa.

descartes has nothing to do with this. I don`t distrust
everything I experience.. only when I feel there`s something
wrong.. unfortunately, some times I have been a bit too
paranoid, and thought things that are there aren`t really
there.. this is rare, though.

while i depend on the apparent stability, coherence and
predictability of what i derive from my senses, i'm aware
that i manufacture what i call "my senses" from an extremely
limited set of data input. the awareness that the
apparently objective world around me possesses only features
which i have assigned to it means i know my senses can't be
trusted. luckily, most people agree with me about the
features that seem stable, coherent and predictable, so i
can go on with the illusion without much trouble. does
anybody really read this stuff?

maybe he just did that `it happened like that before, so it
will most likely happen like that again` thing... like,
`that guy sucks at driving, and so does the guy coming down
that other street. they will most likely crash`

other than that.. weird.

Of course not. Flashes of light, singing dead kids and ghost
people are like par the course. But I think it's pretty
weird that you can taste and smell things that aren't there,
that's something that would creep me out.

that was beautifully written. you obviously have a good
understanding of the word perception.

i was about to say 'yes, but i know my senses are capable of
so much more' which hardly explains anything.

sentences in my father's voice, or a kindergartenfriend
talked in my sisters voice and so on.

I don't know whether I would fully trust my senses but the
times when I have wrongly ignored my senses really stick out
more in my mind rather then the times when they have led me
wrong.

your sense can do no wrong, it's all your brain's fault!
serioulsly, your eye can only catch light... but the brain
interpret it, and there can be problems at that stage...

most of the time if you know well the mechanisms you can
know that it's not "right", most people never notice
anything weird, appart from seeing things, which can be
atributed to day-dreaming of sort most of the time, again
it's your brain not your eyes, and because of that you can
be aware of it...

so, yea, i trust my sense 100% but i don't trust my faulty,
drug fueled brain :P

well, as your brain is required for your senses to make
