I remember I used to be blown away all the time by really fresh sounding music. But nothing has really impressed me for ages. I mean, I still listen to electronica and buy it (probably more than ever, since I am working full time now) but nothing really excites me like it used to. Remember the first time you heard Windowlicker or roygbiv or whatever. Can you honestly say you've had that OMG feeling recently? The last album that made me think "wow" was "Down with the scene" by Kid 606. And that was about four years ago. Unless there's some awesome new artists I'm missing out on or something.

Dance music not dead says Fatboy Slim
"Last month the Brit Awards announced they would no longer be awarding a Best Dance Act prize, with the Brits committee announcing that "dance music is no longer where it's happening in music." These developments lead some to suggest that dance was finished as a popular music genre. "

its good if dance music isnt widely recieved, people will stop making crappy pop trance cum housey stuff. Theres allways been a pumping underground, obviously, its so blatant. hopefully itll just get more and more dirty until its resurgence, which will happen soon enough anyway.

That's part of the problem, not the solution. I mean the whole 80's revival thing was cool a few years ago, but now it's degenerated into bands like The Killers and gay shit like that.

Also when you stick yourself to one genre you limit yourself and "drain the resources" of that particluar genre. Broaden your horizons. Listen to as much varied music as possible.

i hate this way of creating controversy, youve got the problem, not the electronica, no need to do that thread title. and yeah, keep looking in all the wrong places and you'll end up listening to... what? im asking you this question, what would you listen to if it wasnt electronica? which genres of music do you think is as creative, exciting and mind stimulating as electronica?
and yeah, chances are that you probably only know a small range of electronic music? you know, it isnt just skam, warp, planetmu and rephlex?

this music will never die off. it like rock music will get lame at times but as long as theres someone in the world that enjoys it they'll try to carry it on. i know i try everyday to make a track...i'm no snares aphex []pusher or fill your idmbreakcore wet dream name here but.
anyway...

umm, where's it at huh? Joss Stone? yuck! i don't listen to pop radio anymore, well i can't actually, can't stand it. warp is dying off if they keep releasing shitty !!! bands, planet mu is awesome, and rephlex...is well rephlex. there are a lot of smaller labels popping up schematic, sublight, coredump tons of others i dont' even know about but they're starting up and hopefully ushering in new stuff.
to me the film industry is dead...small independant movies are where its at. i have friends that work for paramount and warner brothers and they say its such a joke. how movies are made and marketed now....creativity is dead in that market which is sad. but i still have hope for films just not the big companies trying to ruin them

'Electronica sucks now'
I wouldn't entirely say that's the case. Autechre have proven this year thay they're still going strong, and Boards of Canada have an upcoming release this October. Of course, that's just on Warp. There are other less noticed artists out there as well, such as Ochre, Machine Drum, Mochipet, Brothomstates...check out the Merck label.
Also, it's not necessary to confine yourself to only one genre of preference. There's an ocean of tunes out there.

Re:have you heard of analouge bubblbath 5/ or ceephax acid crew-since you seem knew
No, I am not "knew". Please stop trying to take me to electronica school. You patronising gits. I have been listening to electronica for about seven years and have heard/heard of/own at least three albums by most of the artists recommended by people on this thread. I have collected over 300 vinyl records and god knows how many MP3s. And yes, *sigh* I have heard of stuff on labels aside from warp, rephlex, skam and planet mu.
I listen to lots of stuff on mille plateau, merck, tigerbeat6, disko B, kompakt, schematic, ipecac, etc, etc,
I just don't feel the same passion for it anymore.

sounds like you've overdosed. Happens to the best of us at times. Easily done when you have a large record collection, disposable cash and an endless supply of MP3s. It can be tough to give the music the attention it deserves.
Still it is true that at least 90-odd per cent of all musical genres' output lacks inspiration. It's that cream at the top that you're after - whatever style of music you're listening too. And it isn't always easy to come by.
I really do think it's a shame if you never get that shiver of excitement from listening to something new. I don't get is as often as I used to, but then, that might just be because - when you first discover a whole new world of sound and music, you're simply a less experienced listener. The more you're exposed to anything the more it has to stand out to impress you I guess.

Possibly. I can think of plenty of great albums from the last few years. But not necessarily a lot of new ground broken. Not the way it was when the technology was new and no one knew quite what it's potential was.
But I would refute the idea that the music isn't advancing. I would say, however, that I think listening to nowt but 'electronica' (and everyone has their own definition of what that term includes and excludes) isn't healthy.
As the old cliché says: "variety is the spice of life"

I just want to hear something that makes my jaw drop again. I remember buying Druqks and thinking that even though it was technically well put together, it didn't break ground in the same way the Richard D. James album did. Do you know what I mean?

Sort of.
But going on the other stuff you said you listen to, I'd still say that your musical net isn't cast anywhere near wide enough. Electronica is probably the musical sphere I feel the greatest affinity with, it's the one that provokes the greatest physical and emotional response in me - but there are so many other styles of music I listen to. From techno to disco to dub to reggae to folk, new wave, jazz, punk and so on... Anything goes. I try to ignore genres as boundaries and just go with what affects me. That's just me though. It's all a question of personal taste.
I would say, though, that if I confined my listening to one area of music I worry that I wouldn't appreciate it as much as I ought to.
