What do people use to record sounds coming through one's soundcard from online content or DVD's etc. I used to always use creative recorder's record what you hear function but with my new audio-m soundcard i'm in the market for something else.

what? made by ACID?
it used to be made by Sonic Foundry and now it's made by Sony.
gosh, I don't know anything about input selections.. I just have to be sure to have "wave out mix" selected in the volume panel of windows, fumble a bit with the levels so it doesn't hit SoundForge too loud and then hit record.

as far as i know, the sounds from the web and even streams would generally be going through your main wave thingy. so you'd go into your windows sound mixer and switch your record input to wave. assuming you're using windows.

well that's more or less what I said - if you doubleclick the volume icon in your system tray you can open 'options' and then 'properties'.
if you then tick 'recording' (and you have to have 'stereo mix' ticked too!) and click OK you get the stereo mix panel, which you must then 'Select' by ticking that box.
you should be able to record the stream real time with most recording devices then.
