'Apocalypse Now' is amazing - easily one of my favourite
films of all time. That film captures my imagine unlike any
other film. I've watched the redux plenty of times and it
never seems to get old; the atmosphere makes the journey up
river beyond riveting. Words cannot explain. It fucking
rocks!

The Godfather's were pretty good but the latter ones were a
bit boring.

I saw 'Rumble Fish' in the video shop but that also looks
like it can be boring. I rented Dune instead (Ironically
that also turned out to be a tad boring).

What else has this man directed that is worth watching?

Next time you're in the video shop get "Rumble Fish" out,
it's an amazing film. Great atmosphere, and not at all
boring. Mind you, I like "One from the heart" as well, so...

i'm a big fan of Apocalypse Now and the Conversation. also
the Godfather trilogy has a special place in my heart. but
yeah: see the Conversation... it's pretty different, but way
cool.

Coppola is a genius in his own way. His mental problems and
depression during ALL of his shoots in the 70's helped in
that way. The paranoia of the post-war is best demonstrated
in his films, like Scorsese, DePalma. Godfather 1/2, The
Conversation, Apocalypse Now, One from the Heart, and Rumble
Fish.

I see no connection at all between Kubrick and Coppola, in
the way they tell a story on screen. They are really
different directors.

Imho Rumble Fish is his last great movie imho (Dracula is
"good"). There's something in it, some sort of expressionist
magical poetry. Really looking at the box, you might think
it's a simple movie, but once you start watching it, in all
it's amazing Black and White shots, the way it ends, the
atmosphere, the subtle messages, the poetry of art 24
frames per seconds. Never happen with him after that.

There's some IDM in The Conversation in the sound design,
fucked up ASP (Analogue Sound Processing, father of DSP!)

;)

what about scorcese ? kubrick and scorcese are the top 2
greatest american directors in my opinion. both very
different and unique styles.

oh man, in no way was i comparing the two directors. i was
just being silly... or did i not have to explain that part?

Evol, it's just that so many people, when talking about
directors, out of no where will post "OMG STANLEY KUBRICK IS
TEH MAN!!!!". Even when it's like Uwe Boll

r40f The Godfather Part II is a superior movie I think also.
I mean just thinking about it, FIVE of it's actors had a
nomination for an Oscar. That's amazing, FIVE!

Oh and mimi I guess you're talking about the book, but if
you ever have the chance, try to find out the documentary
also called "Heart of Darkness: A Filmmaker's Apocalypse".
It might enlight you on why ANow is a flawled masterpiece
(like so many other movies).

The godfather was very boring to me. I bought it remembering
it being good but probably confused it with something else
like scarface (I just bought scarface so will find out).

than that

really?

that is pretty much the general consensus. I don't see why.
I think the first one is much, much better than the second.

then again I also think "return of the jedi" is a better
film than the overhyped "empire strikes back", so I'm
probably just shit at watching films.

The book or the documentary?

Btw they did a straight-adaptation of the book as a TV-movie
back in the 90's.

I would have also loved to see Orson Welles version of it,
had he had the chance to do it completely. It would have
been his first true movie, a year before Citizen Kane. The
sets were build, casting was chosen, etc... Imagine his
mindset at the time, perhaps it would have been a
masterpeice like CK, in terms of how it would advance modern
cinema.

imagine how it would make Citizen Kane less of a
masterrpiece

The Conversation should be material researched by film
students on how to do a modern suspense story right. IMO
Coppola's pinnacle achievement.
