for those looking for a legal drug, or for the curious. you can find it at some asian supermarkets. it's an immature nut, about the size of a small lime, not hard but soft and chewy with a green fibrous husk. kind of like chewing tobbacco, but different, giving a mellow rush. my whole body flushes red when i chew. it's enjoyable for me. you need to buy 3 things: a bag of frozen betel nuts, betel leaves, either fresh green ones or dried will do, and a jar of limestone paste. these might be located in different parts of the store, as in both asian supermarkets i've been to, so ask a clerk if you're having trouble. if you are nice they will be nice back. total cost is about 5-7 dollars here in the U.S. once you've procured these 3 essential indredients (it won't work without all 3) you are ready to chew (or "mix" as the Micronesians call it). thaw the betel nuts using warm water, 15 seconds in the microwave, the dashboard of your car in hot weather, whatever. cut a betel nut into thirds or fourths. juice will come out as you cut. seperate the nut from the husk and use your knife to dip about a pea-sized amount of limestone paste and put the paste in the husk, then put the soft nut back in its original position over the paste. a word of caution here: don't use too much limestone or it will seep out and give you burns. next, wrap a betel leaf around the whole thing and put it in your mouth. chew it slowly at first or the limestone will get out and burn you. keep the chew in a wad. you will get more juice as you chew, so spit. at first the spit will be light yellowish in color, meaning the whole chew is not mixed fully yet. the spit will turn more viscous and red as you keep chewing, meaning the chemical reaction which gives the sensation is happening. once your spit starts to turn orangish-red it is safe to start chewing faster. now chew it like you would chew food, but still keeping it together in a wad. the full sensation lasts for about five minutes, with a longer tapering-off time. |

no doubt, but some (not me) don't want to partake of the devil's smoke as they believe it'll put 'em on the road to ruin. maybe some (like me) can't partake of the wisdom weed even though they want to (probation for DUI), so i just thought i'd drop this topic in. |
