Faith?

offline Monoid from one source all things depend on 2005-08-08 01:17 [#01687541]

Faith requires a belief in the unknown or the seemingly
unlikely.
But, You can not BELIEVE that you KNOW something UNKNOWN ?
You WANT to believe....you DECIDE to believe. But your
believe in god can not come from this decission ?

You can not BELIEVE that you KNOW something UNKNOWN

To believe that you know something unknown is to acknowledge
the fact that you cannot know, for certain, whether you know
something that is "UNKNOWN", but you have faith that you do
know it.

To believe in the existance of something, God for example,
is something entirely different.

yeah the choice of words was unfortunate.

I should've added "To believe in the existance of something,
whose existance is unknown, God for....." to the last
paragraph.

How so ? I believe that I believe ? You WANT to
believe....you DECIDE to believe. Therefor my BELIVES are
based on a DECISSION

Yes, if that is the case, they are.

However, in regard to religion, people are indoctrinated
systematically at a young age, so as to condition them to
believing.. So in most peoples' cases, their belief in God
isn't down to their own decision.

many people with faith believe there is proof, for example,
miracles.

So, only CHRISTIANS produce CHRISTIANS and not the BIBLE or
god himself?

err.

Interpretting what you wrote as "So, CHRISTIANS produce only
CHRISTIANS....." - when did I say that? Please rephrase your
question.

Interpretting it as "So, only CHRISTIANS produce
CHRISTIANS...." - well yes, that would make sense.
Christians usually don't strive to turn people into muslims
or buddhists, do they?

sorry, i must correct you. it's beliefs

the idea of belief doesn't just come from nailing the idea
of 'God' into the minds of children through religion. think
of fairies, father christmas, the bogey man for example.

saying this, i do woner if it would be at all the same if we
didn't condition children into believing other worldy ideas

No they don't. Chicken don't strive to turn chicken into
elephants for example. Why is that? Because of an
evolutionary process.

oh right, so the evolutionary process takes care of the
transformation from chickens to elephants.

Right.

You've got a pretty bizarre train of thought, man.

i find that statement interesting because it puts forward
the question: is a belief in the supernatural a prequisite
for a belief in a deity?

Ok, so taking your second post into account, your example

chickens evolved from elephants. Right. Other way around.
Sorry I misunderstood you.

I don't think you meant to go down that round at all!
There's a huge difference between your species and the
workings of the mind (even so, chickens? humans are the only
species capable of 'turning' one thing into the other and
even then it's not the same at all!). It looks like you're
talking about this chicken thing in a completely literal
sense.

I know it was meant to be an analogy, but it didn't make
sense to me, and when I asked monoid it seemed he was
asserting that chickens evolved from elephants.. or the
other way around or something. i don't know.

what i'm saying is, I didn't mean to make a mountain out of
it, but i'm kinda glad i did now. you dug a hole for
yourself with this one, monoid old chap. time to finally
admit defeat and perhaps:

1) take some advice this board has been giving you for years

or

2) take some advice this board has been giving you for years

Stop this bullshit creating topics for "intellectual

Baby
I know you're asking me to stay
Say please, please, please, don't go away
You say I'm giving you the blues
Maybe
You mean every word you say
Can't help but think of yesterday
And another who tied me down to loverboy rules

There's nothing to discuss or argue here, Monoid, because as

The "self-proclaimed smart people" posted in it to tell you

being wrong, throughout the thread.

This does not make you a smart person, let alone smarter
than the "smart people".

Sorry, maybe I should make myself more clear:

AUTOPOIESIS:

the process whereby an organization produces itself. An
autopoietic organization is an autonomous and
self-maintaining unity which contains component-producing
processes. The components, through their interaction,
generate recursively the same network of processes which
produced them. An autopoietic system is operationally
closed.
Therefore a Chicken can never become an Elephant (tho they
have many things in common)
