Can't think of anything besides Bungle and Fantomas albums. Perhaps the live duo's that are floating around on soulseek, I can recommend the duo with Joey Baron. Oh and don't forget the patton live sets with Naked City.

look for any of his live sets with Rahzel. Mr. Bungle's second album, Disco Volante, is perfect. both of his solo albums, Adult Themes For Voice and Pranzo Oltranzista, are both absolutely essential.

I think it's very good for a deliberately pop album. A little bit boring sure, but deffinately doesn't reach the lows of Mit Gas by Tomahawk.

i disagree. it is terrible even for a deliberately commercial pop album. and even if it was good for something shit in the first place, why would you listen to it?

I listened to it twice and it's anough. I wouldn't recommend it to anyone here, but I wouldn't mind if people around me listened to this kind of music. In this it's similar to Tobin's "Chaos Theory" - not really good, quite uninteresting, but can serve as an introduction to better music.
Also, let me point out that I'm not a fan of Patton's arty stuff. It feels very empty and forced to me. I prefer his pop aberrations.

i understand what you mean but i'd agree with QRDL - for a pop record it's not that bad. still better than his collabo album with Kaada, which was just utterly boring, imo.

i guess the point is - i expect more from artists like him that i respect. patton has done all these great things... but no matter how you cut it, this is just a shitty record.
the demos are 100x better. the lyrics on the official album are terrible, the extra parts he added are terrible... he had a handful of good/great songs that he then overproduced and ruined.

hm. of course i'm not familiar with his complete output, so my impressions surely are biased to a certain extent (and i'd appreciate recommendations that might change my view), but imho mr. patton may indeed be a very competent eclecticist and technically high profile and versatile musician, but not much else. his works
(mostly collaborations as far as i know) are often quite impressing in terms of virtuosity and so on (but also with alot of exceptions... yes, peeping tom for example is just totally pointless to me, too, as were/are tomahawk), but never in any way "touching" to me, as i feel he just totally lacks any subjectivity/ character. the idiosynchratic standpoints he takes in his art always somehow feel so frantically exerted to me. i once heard one of those naked city (mr bungle owe much to them, conceptually, don't they?) live sets mentioned , it was a good example for his ability to emulate singing styles (in that case eyes) but... well, it didn't add anything personal to the mix. it's just solid emulation and somehow i have that feeling with just about any of his projects. it always feels like music-historical quoting. also i think through this kind of dealing with different "avantgardisms" as a gimmick he is well involved in the institutionalizing of the term "avantgarde" as a genre, which it shouldn't be per definition. also he has a very plump and sarcasting sense of humor and bad breath and my ex was a fan of the california record.
the end.
ps: i liked his solo-voice stuff, maybe the only time i felt at least some intimacy with the artist. also i appreciated his contribution to bob ostertag's "fear no love" record. peace.
